Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse works under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager, or their designee, in accordance with the objectives, policies, and procedures of the nursing department and established professional standards. Provides total nursing care to patients of all ages, newborn through geriatrics. Effectively interacts with patients and healthcare members, while maintaining standards of professional nursing.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Plans, provides, and evaluates patient care as a member of the health care team, strictly adhering to principals of asepsis and infection control guidelines when performing patient care.
  • Assesses individual patient learning needs, and institutes teaching methods in preparation for discharge.
  • Regularly assesses nursing care, identifies potential problems, develops nursing interventions, and directs implementation of nursing interventions to all health care team members.
  • Delegates staff assignments and responsibilities effectively;
    Assumes responsibility for leadership position within department; identifies and appropriately uses chain of command to resolve unit, staff, and patient problems.
  • Transcribe correctly and implement appropriately all physician orders per policy and procedure.
  • Accurately, clearly and concisely record all pertinent information on the patient's medical record, according to policy and procedure.
  • Identify and correlate abnormal diagnostic data with patient status; reports and records appropriately.
  • Use computer programs, including Order Entry, per policy and procedure as assigned.
  • Prepares and administer medications via all acceptable routes, including appropriate documentation with knowledge of all medications administered in accordance with policies, procedures, and standards of care.
  • Properly identifies patients with allergies; documents the presence of reaction or absence of known allergies per policy and procedure.
  • Maintains proper level of stock and emergency supplies as unit requires.
  • Regularly checks equipment and emergency crash cart per unit-specific policy.
  • Correctly Identifies reactions to drugs; records and reports reactions appropriately.
  • Routinely provides for patient safety through preventive measures (i.e. side rails, restraints as per physician order, low bed position and safe transport to other areas).
  • Records all pertinent information on the patient's medical records, according to policy and procedure in a clear, accurate and concise manner.
  • Identifies and correlates abnormal diagnostic data with patient status, report, and record appropriately.
  • Correctly identifies patient by name and  for all direct care, procedures, and treatments.
  • Communicates respectfully with patients and promptly responds to patient needs or requests.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all patient, hospital, and physician-related information; demonstrate complete discretion when discussing patient information.

Required Skills/Abilities (Unit Specific):
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as active listening skills.
  • Ability to create superior patient experiences while generating positive guest relations in an office setting is required.
  • Ability to work effectively and communicate effectively in a team environment; continuously looking for solutions to improve patient care.
  • Prioritization of patient needs based on ongoing assessment
  • Proficiency in medication administration and practiced phlebotomy skills.
  • Professionalism and business acumen appropriate for working with guests, providers, employees and volunteers.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and critical thinking of critical care and emergency protocols.
  • Proficiency in utilizing critical care and emergency equipment.
  • Ability to use resources/supplies with cost-effective awareness.
  • Knowledge and ability to titrate medication based on provider's orders and continual assessment of patient response.
Education and Experience:
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  • RN
    - Current licensure in NYS.
  • Current certification in CPR.
  • Unit specific orientation.
  • Completion of IV therapy, pharmacology, telemetry, ACLS, PALS, critical care, and PACU orientation within first year of hire.
Working Conditions:
  • Requires frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling beds, wheelchairs and recliners in excess of approximately 200 pounds with assistance. Requires lifting, carrying, repositioning, and transferring patients using proper body mechanics.
  • Position requires attendance, as scheduled, to ensure requirements are met.
  • Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, and infectious/hazardous materials.
  • Occasionally requires assembling, operating, checking, and maintaining equipment.
  • Requires attending meetings as well as participation on committees as required.
