POSITION: High School Principal
LOCATION: Otsego High School
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
WORK YEAR: 10-month position (43 weeks)
Otsego Public Schools serves approximately 2300 students across 85 square miles that include Allegan and Kalamazoo counties. GENERALDESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the superintendent and/or designee, the individual in this position will provide equity-focused leadership and direction in the implementation of the district’s goals around student achievement and growth, wellness and mental health and diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice. The principal is responsible for the day-to-day building administration and the safety and welfare of all students and staff.
They establish a safe, pleasant and effective educational atmosphere, as well as provide and implement school policy.
- Possess a valid Michigan School Administrator certificate
- Possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate - preferred
- Administrative experience at the secondary level preferred
- K-12 classroom teaching experience
- Demonstrated ability to think and act through an equity-focused lens
- Demonstrated leadership skills in planning, instruction, decision-making, supervision, conflict resolution, evaluation, group facilitation with adult learning and public relations
- Strong interpersonal skills to communicate verbally and in writing to a wide variety of audiences
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, staff, parents and the general public
- Demonstrated knowledge and practice in teacher performance evaluation, school improvement, processes, creative secondary instructional models, MTSS model, Restorative Practices
- Demonstrated achievement in closing achievement gaps
- Interact with all students in a positive manner to encourage performance at their highest level
- Supervise building staff, conduct staff meetings, assign teachers to classrooms and students to classes through scheduling process
- Provide general supervision/discipline to students and supervise extracurricular activities
- Evaluate performance and effectiveness of programs and staff
- Engage in the IEP process and facilitate the ongoing implementation of the IEP and behavior support plans
- Maintain relations with parents, parent groups, school volunteers and outside agencies
- Participate in and support development of district-wide activities, in-services and committees
- Implement policy and procedure changes with the Board of Education or the State and Federal level
- Prepare the school budget and work with the Director of Finance on budgeting/purchasing
- Establish programs that reflect the needs of post secondary community (College, Career, CTE, etc.)
- Establish priorities to meet the needs of students and teachers through work with the School Leadership Team and collaboration with staff and parents
- Work with central office personnel to coordinate processes for effective functioning of the school, including Pupil Accounting efforts
- Facilitate the use of quantitative and qualitative instructive data to support Professional Learning Communities and daily actions of teachers to inform instructional decision-making
- Identify and engage in his/her own professional growth in shaping the principal’s professional practice
- Oversee virtual programming
The Otsego Board of Education will provide a competitive compensation package. The actual salary and fringe benefits will be commensurate with the education and experience of the candidate. The salary is based on the Otsego Public Schools administrative framework. The starting date for this position is August 3, 2026.
