ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT

Location:

OCDSB Administration Building; 133 Greenbank Road, Nepean ON

Position Status: 1.0 Regular, Full-time, 12 month work year

Hours of Work:
Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week

Affiliation: OSSTF District 25 - Educational Support Professionals (ESP)

Salary range: $49,556 to $61,287 per annum (Level
5)

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Finance Officer, the Accounting Assistant provides clerical support to Financial Services in the areas of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general accounting. This position will process payments to vendors and schools/sites; receives and records revenue from federal, provincial, corporate and public sources; provides a high degree of service/support to schools/departments and the public; responds to written, electronic, telephone, in-person, school/departmental and external queries in a knowledgeable, professional and courteous manner;

files and records electronic payments and receipts; and provides support and assistance to Accounting Administrators.

Qualifications
  • Secondary diploma, and an additional year of post secondary accounting courses (Accounting I and II), and a minimum of 1 year related accounting experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered;
  • Familiarity with relevant OCDSB policies and procedures;
  • Knowledge of financial and accounting procedures and practices;
  • Working knowledge of the OCDSB financial systems, including applicable accounting software, budget inquiry, facility booking and invoicing systems is preferred.
  • Good Keyboarding skills for data entry activities;
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite, including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications;
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly to new financial applications in a rapidly changing data processing environment;
  • Ability to reconcile general ledger accounts and vendor statements;
  • Interpersonal and (oral and written) communication skills for providing customer service support/assistance, responding to inquiries, and providing explanations and clarification to OCDSB personnel and external clients in a friendly, courteous and efficient manner, and for which tact, diplomacy and discretion is required;
  • Organization and time management skills to organize tasks and meet established deadlines;
  • Ability to adapt to changes in technology (ie. electronic methods of paying/receiving) while reconciling accounts and reports;
  • Ability to work independently, with minimum supervision and as part of a team.

Note:

as part of the selection process, a basic bookkeeping test may be administered prior to the interview.

Selection Process

  • Applications from term and casual employees within the ESP bargaining unit are given 2nd consideration. (External Posting)
  • Applications from External candidates (including Board employees that do not belong to this bargaining unit) will be considered only if applications from 1 & 2 have been exhausted.

In accordance with the collective agreement, a newly hired regular employee is not eligible to accept another position for a period of six (6) months.
