Overview

5+ years of experience in Indigenous relations, consultation, or engagement, with experience in Impact Assessment or environmental regulatory processes. Must be able to travel at least monthly as required by clients within Ontario and Quebec.

Avaanz is now part of SLR Consulting (Canada) Ltd., bringing together Avaanz’s specialized socio‑economic and Indigenous relations expertise with SLR’s global technical capabilities in ecology, water, geotechnical, and power engineering. Together, we deliver integrated environmental and social services across Canada, supporting both fast‑paced assignments and complex, multi‑year infrastructure initiatives.

Within this structure, depending on your expertise and experience level, you will contribute to and/or lead Indigenous relations and engagement for a major infrastructure project and support reconciliation, environmental and impact assessment processes, and inclusive development.

We’re looking for a relationship‑builder, collaborator, and problem‑solver. Someone who thrives on meaningful engagement, understands the nuances of Indigenous consultation, and wants to make a real impact on projects that shape communities.

Key Responsibilities and Activities
  • Plan and deliver consultation and engagement activities that promote meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and reconciliation with Indigenous communities.
  • Assist in the co‑development and implementation of Indigenous participation and socio‑economic benefit plans, including opportunities for employment, business development, and service provision.
  • Organize and facilitate meetings, workshops, and presentations (in‑person or virtual), including preparing materials, managing logistics, and ensuring accurate documentation of outcomes.
  • Monitor and support the implementation of agreements, protocols, and plans with Indigenous partners and document engagement activities in systems such as Borealis.
  • Prepare factual and analytical reports, briefings, and progress updates for internal and client review.
  • Travel to Indigenous communities or meetings with community representatives as required.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Indigenous Relations Services.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills; professional bilingualism (French first) is a strong asset.
  • Experience with Impact Assessment or Environmental Assessment projects.
  • Must reside in Quebec (Montreal or Quebec City) or Toronto and Eastern Ontario.
  • Proven understanding of Indigenous consultation processes and relevant legislation/policies.
  • Demonstrated field experience in engagement, facilitation, and relationship‑building.
  • Experience documenting consultation and engagement activities.
  • Must be able to travel at least monthly as required by clients within Ontario and Quebec.
Assets That Will Set You Apart
  • Familiarity with engagement management software.
  • Post‑secondary degree in a related field (e.g., Indigenous studies, social sciences, environmental planning, or resource management).
  • Consulting background strongly preferred.
  • Major projects and/or regulatory experience.
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to work effectively with Indigenous communities, governments, and clients.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Competitive total compensation package including comprehensive benefits, vacation, and RRSP employer contributions.
  • Salary range: $70,000 - $95,000. Final agreed upon compensation will be commensurate with individual education, professional designation, experience, internal parity, and location.
  • Full‑time, permanent role with opportunities for professional growth and advancement.
