SUMMER STUDENT POSITIONS IN SOCIAL WORK - INDIGENOUS FOCUS

BILINGUAL/English Position

Full-Time Opportunities (35 hours/week)

The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) of Ottawa is committed to protecting the children and youth of our community from abuse and neglect. We work in collaboration with community partners to ensure their well-being and to strengthen the capacity of families and the communities in which they live.

Our Child Protection Services and Child and Youth in Care Services is currently hiring one (1) Social Work students for the summer months to provide routine supportive duties to designated supervisors/workers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reporting to a Supervisor of Child Protection Services or Child and Youth in Care Services, the Summer Student will be providing the following responsibilities:
  • Assists the assigned worker with scheduling of meetings and visits, case documentation, maintaining appropriate documentation on client contacts and completing summer camp applications for children, as directed.
  • Supports, as required, in investigations/family assessments and provides timely and supportive follow up under the direction of the assigned worker.
  • Assists the assigned worker with placement arrangements and in providing support and assistance to children, families and care providers during the pre-placement and placement process.
  • Researches and suggests most appropriate community resources for client’s needs.
  • Transports children, as required and reporting back to the assigned case worker on significant information.
  • May supervise family visits between children in care and their families, as directed.
  • Research files, gathers other required information for the purpose of searching for kin and writing social histories for children in the care of the Society.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • REQUIREMENTS &

    COMPETENCIES:

  • Current student enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor or Master of Social Work program who meet the Canada Summer Jobs Grant eligibility criteria.
  • Experience working with children and families is highly desired.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Sound knowledge of our mandate and the services that we provide.
  • Knowledge of Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA), Ministry standards and guidelines related to child protection and Society policies and procedures is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities to work effectively in cross-cultural situations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the culture, history and current oppressions experienced by people related to gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation faced within the 2

    SLGBTQIA+ communities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the culture, history and current oppressions experienced by Indigenous peoples and racialized communities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities to work effectively with diverse communities and Indigenous Peoples.
  • Applies anti-racist, anti-ableist, anti-colonialism, anti-heterosexism and anti-cissexism lenses to social problems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with clients, staff and community professionals.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to respond to competing demands.
  • Good judgment, good decision-making skills, excellent organizational and planning skills and the ability to work independently as well as within a team setting.
  • Proven ability in using office software, i.e., MS Word, MS Excel, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Valid Driver’s License and access or ownership to a vehicle is required.
  • Satisfactory Police Record Check for Service with the Vulnerable Sector is required upon hire.
