Corporate Finance Team Overview
The Corporate Finance team within Canadian Commercial Banking is part of the BMO Financial Group and covers both public and large private corporate clients operating in diversified industries. The team is responsible for marketing, managing, and monitoring large commercial loan portfolios, and for supporting credit requirements and cross‑selling efforts for related businesses including subordinated debt, equipment leasing, derivatives, cash management, and trade finance.
The team assesses financing opportunities of $10,000,000 or more, on both a syndicated and bilateral basis.
The Associate Director plays a critical role in supporting the growth and risk‑management objectives of the portfolio. This role requires advanced financial analysis, strong credit analysis, and relationship management abilities. Associate Directors contribute to client decisioning, credit structuring, and portfolio oversight, while also supporting new business development and delivering a superior client experience. Work is performed in close partnership with Managing Director and/or Director.
Responsibilities- Negotiate loan structures and terms that align client requirements with the bank’s risk appetite and policies.
- Assess client repayment capacity by utilizing financial models and analytical tools to recommend appropriate loan structures and collateral requirements.
- Sign off on new, renewal, and extension loans within delegated authority.
- Monitor the portfolio to identify deteriorating credit conditions and compliance, analyze metrics, and assess broader industry trends to spot risks and opportunities.
- Evaluate portfolio performance and recommend capital allocation strategies that optimize returns with investment objectives.
- Lead proposal development and deliver presentations to capture new business and expand client relationships.
- Network with industry contacts to gather competitive insights and best practices.
- Develop and execute business development plans focused on enhancing client relationships and growth opportunities within the portfolio.
- Build and maintain client relationships to ensure long‑term financial performance in collaboration with Relationship Manager and business partners.
- Structure and support new, renewal, and extension loans aligned with client needs and bank & risk policies.
- Conduct financial analysis and risk assessments of clients’ credit information for an assigned portfolio to provide insights and make informed decisions.
- Monitor the portfolio performance for assigned commercial banking clients on an ongoing basis, taking corrective action when required.
- Minimize BMO’s risk exposure by adhering to credit policies, regulatory standards, and operational guidelines.
- Serve as a point of contact for service requests, ensuring expectations are consistently met or exceeded. Escalate issues when needed.
- Support and implement initiatives to enhance service quality, acquire new business, and expand client relationships.
- Identify revenue and cross‑selling opportunities to enhance portfolio growth.
- Identify share‑of‑wallet opportunities.
- Leverage analysis tools to nurture and grow a portfolio that exceeds ROE thresholds and evaluate client returns proactively.
- Manage timely and accurate data entry into BMO’s systems and use the data to support decision‑making.
- Focus is primarily on the business/group within BMO; may have broader, enterprise‑wide focus.
- Provide specialized consulting, analytical, and technical support.
- Exercise judgment to identify, diagnose, and solve problems within given rules.
- Work independently and regularly handle non‑routine situations.
- Preferred 5–7 years of relevant experience in credit or lending instruments or financial operations in a corporate or banking environment.
- For Credit Qualifiable roles, credit qualifications and associated credit knowledge and skills according to the portfolio requirements and qualification standards.
- Bachelor’s degree required;
