A Day in the Life of a Senior Financial Analyst, Treasury and Reporting

Reporting to the Corporate, Controller, the Senior Financial Analyst, Treasury and Financial Reporting is responsible for cost and revenue management and reporting for the Standards Council of Canada (SCC). Is further responsible for the accounting technology services and the treasury and cash management activities.

Security clearance: Secret

Language: Bilingual Imperative (SISS)

Education
  • Post secondary education in accounting with an accounting designation in good standing or in the advance process of obtaining the full designation
Experience and skills
  • 5-7 years experience in budgeting, revenue management and accounting systems management.
  • 5 years of experience consolidating budget submissions and preparing them in proper format for presentation to approval bodies.
  • In-depth knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards as well as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Knowledge of the Income Tax Act.
  • Knowledge of the methods for preparing variance analyses and cost-based analyses.
  • Experience developing reports, dashboards, and insights to communicate learning impact to senior leadership
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate learning data and outcomes into clear, compelling narratives for a corporate audience

Key Activities
  • Ensures financial data integrity and security in the general ledger and the account’s payable, receivable and project accounting subledgers.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors appropriate management tools, controls, and systems to support the effective use of organizational resources.
  • Provides authoritative advice regarding Public Sector Accounting Practices.
  • Coordinates period-end closing activities across SCC including communication, period-end accounting routines and reconciliation of ledgers,
  • Prepares payroll accounting and the reconciliation of payroll related general ledger accounts.
  • Prepares quarterly financial statements and oversees the production of the proactive disclosure statements.
  • Prepares statutory reports on behalf of SCC including Public Accounts reports, statistical reporting, and payroll reporting requirements.
  • Prepares tax forms on behalf of SCC including EHT Returns, T1204 Tax Slips, T2200 forms.
  • Provides timely, relevant, and accurate analysis of the organization’s financial performance against historical, budgeted and forecasted results for presentation to budget managers, SCC’s senior management, Audit Committee and Council.
  • Prepares notes to accompany the budgets and operational plans including official cover letters to the Minister and letters requestion or providing information to the Treasury Board.
  • Provides technical expertise and assistance in support of management decision making for the budgeting, forecasting, costing and variance analysis processes across all of SCC, as well as business cases for new funding.
  • Designs reports, provides specialized financial research, and resolves branch financial inquiries.
