Human Resources Generalist
Location: Hybrid or local (MNC Office, #600-180 Elgin Street, Ottawa, ON)
Position Status: Full Time (35 hours per week) with benefits

The OrganizationThe Métis Nation is a distinct Indigenous people recognized under Section 35 of the Canadian Constitution Act, 1982. The Métis National Council (MNC) and its Governing Members advocate for the Métis Nation. The primary mandate of the MNC is to work with federal and other key stakeholders to resolve systemic issues and concerns of the Métis Nation such as the fiscal relationship with the federal government;
economic development; health; childcare and family services; education; environment, Métis veterans, and language promotion and protection. The MNC represents the Métis Nation both domestically and abroad and seeks to reinforce the Métis Nation’s right to self-government in Canada.
The Human Resources Generalist plays a key role in supporting MNC’s people and workplace culture. Reporting to the Senior Director of Administration, the HR Generalist is responsible for overseeing the MNC’s recruitment, onboarding employee relations, policy development, performance management, and employee engagement.
This position works collaboratively with managers to provide support and guidance on HR policies and ensure compliance with employment legislation. The successful candidate is a proactive, solutions-focused professional who is passionate about supporting the team and strengthening organizational effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities Recruitment & Onboarding- Coordinate the onboarding process for new employees.
- Prepare job descriptions and manages the full cycle recruitment process.
- Serve as primary point of contact for any HR inquiries.
- Provide guidance and support to managers on HR policies, procedures and workplace matters.
- Assist in the development, implementation and ongoing review and improve HR policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with federal and provincial employment legislation.
- Monitor changes in trends, best practices, legislative changes, and emerging technologies in human resources, talent management and employment law.
- Support managers with performance management processes.
- Monitor recruitment and retention trends and recommend strategies to attract and retain high performing employees.
- Provide input and recommendations to enhance organizational effectiveness, productivity and administrative efficiency.
- Actively participate in occupational health and safety initiatives, taking a lead role in safety optimizing workplace safety.
- Promote and support a workplace culture rooted in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Prepare employment agreements, offer letters, reports and other HR documentation.
- Support employee offboarding, including the preparation of termination and severance documentation.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with applicable employment standards.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
- Post-secondary degree in Human Resources, or related field. CHRP certification is considered an asset.
- Minimum five years of related experience, including recruitment.
- Be well-versed in laws and regulations regarding Ontario’s Employment Standards Act, Occupations Health and Safety and Human Right legislation and regulations.
- Knowledge and expertise in HR policies and procedures
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Excellent communication skills
- Demonstrated understanding of Métis culture, history, and the unique challenges faced by Métis communities.
- Knowledge of the Métis Nation’s historical, political and legal context.
- High level of tact, diplomacy, and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential matters.
- Sound judgement and creativity in problem solving and decision-making.
