Director, Clinical Engineering & Corporate Services

Responsibilities

Director, Clinical Engineering provides strategic and operational leadership for clinical engineering services across the organization while overseeing CHEO’s regional clinical engineering service model. The Director is responsible for providing leadership to over 70 employees within the clinical engineering service team, which serves 20 healthcare facilities at 30 sites along with up to 300 other clinical entities. The Director will lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation of departmental strategies, quality improvement initiatives, risk management systems and operational priorities aligned with CHEO’s mission, values and strategic direction.

As a trusted advisor to senior leadership, the Director contributes expertise to corporate planning and decision-making while ensuring biomedical engineering services remain innovative, sustainable and responsive to evolving healthcare needs and legislative requirements. The Director will work closely with internal departments, healthcare partners, vendors and regional customers to support service excellence, equipment reliability and long‑term capital planning, and plays a critical role in identifying opportunities for operational efficiencies, cost savings and service enhancements related to clinical equipment procurement, maintenance and utilization.

The Director, Clinical Engineering is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the department, including operational oversight, financial stewardship and people leadership. This includes leading departmental planning, managing operating and capital budgets, overseeing contract negotiations and procurement processes, establishing performance metrics and ensuring the effective delivery of biomedical engineering services. The Director fosters a culture grounded in respect, accountability, wellbeing, safety and continuous learning while supporting employee engagement, development and performance management.

You are comfortable balancing long‑term planning with day‑to‑day operational demands and have a strong commitment to quality, safety and service improvement. Candidates must possess a university degree in a relevant discipline along with approximately ten years of related experience, including a minimum of five years in a management or leadership capacity.

Equivalent combinations of education, training and demonstrated experience may also be considered. Experience with in healthcare or biomedical engineering environments is strongly valued.

The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional analytical, communication and relationship‑building skills, along with the ability to manage complex projects, lead multidisciplinary teams and oversee significant operational budgets. A strong understanding of healthcare technology management, procurement practices, quality standards and occupational health and safety legislation is essential. Depending on departmental needs, this position may be designated bilingual.
