Position Overview
This position is accountable for operating and maintaining the drill rigs to obtain soil samples necessary for the design and construction of new highways and structures.
Essential Functions
* Operates and maintains the subsurface investigations equipment.
* Supervises, trains, and motivates the temporary subsurface investigations crew.
* Performs subsurface investigations for structures and highways to be built in the district.
* Contacts utility companies to have underground utilities located.
* Obtains pavement cores.
* Performs all duties in accordance with all department policies. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
* Completion of two years of college in engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR seven years of engineering experience.
Preferred Qualifications
* Ability to direct the work of other crew members.
* Strong communication skills.
* Strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to place JULIE requests online.
Conditions of Employment
* Valid commercial driver's license (CDL); minimum of a Class B with airbrake qualification.
* Extensive district wide travel.
* Ability to lift over 50 pounds.
* Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and drug and alcohol testing.
* Successful completion of a background screening.
* This position will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
* Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
