The City of Ottawa is recruiting for a Technician in Utility Support Services. The Technician
- Utility Support Services, supports daily utility operations by ensuring materials, equipment, and supplies are received, organized, and made readily available for all utility divisions, including Electric Distribution, Water Distribution, and Wastewater Collection. Under the supervision of the Utility Support Services Manager, this position is responsible for maintaining inventory accuracy, preparing materials for field use, and assisting in the coordination of resources needed for both routine work and emergency response.
The Technician plays a key role in ensuring field crews have timely access to the materials and equipment necessary to perform their work safely and efficiently. In addition, this position contributes to maintaining a clean, safe, and organized Utilities Support Center by assisting with facility upkeep, minor maintenance, and janitorial duties as needed. This role is expected to operate with a support-first mindset, understanding that their work directly impacts the efficiency and success of utility operations across the organization.
Job Functions Inventory & Material Support
- Receive, inspect, and verify all incoming materials and supplies to ensure accuracy and quality.
- Issue materials and parts to utility personnel using established inventory systems (Parts Express or equivalent).
- Maintain accurate inventory counts and ensure proper storage and organization of all materials.
- Label and track inventory items, creating and updating tags as needed.
- Prepare water and electric meters and associated materials for installation.
- Maintain records of transformers and other tracked assets within designated systems.
- Assist in staging materials and equipment for planned work, maintenance activities, and emergency response.
- Deliver and pick up materials from vendors and job sites as needed.
- Support field crews by ensuring timely availability of required materials and supplies.
- Assist in identifying inventory shortages or issues that may impact operations and communicate them to supervisors.
- Maintain accurate records in inventory management systems (Dude Solutions or equivalent).
- Utilize software systems for tracking materials, meters, and assets (UDM, PBC Manager, etc.).
- Ensure documentation related to inventory and materials is accurate and up to date.
- Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and functional Utilities Support Center.
- Perform minor building maintenance and janitorial duties as needed to support daily operations.
- Ensure all materials are stored in an orderly and accessible manner to support efficient workflow.
- Assist in maintaining exterior areas of the facility as needed to ensure a professional appearance.

- Perform monthly safety checks on fire extinguishers and emergency lighting and report any issues.
- Assist with general facility upkeep, including basic grounds maintenance as needed.
- Comply with City ordinances and practices.
- Assist other departments and perform related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of one year of basic inventory and stock control experience.
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Basic knowledge of inventory control and material handling procedures.
- Ability to operate warehouse equipment such as forklifts and hand/power tools safely.
