Purpose Statement

To provide students with a safe, attractive, clean, and efficient place to learn, play, and develop. To maintain the school facility in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety.

Qualifications
  • High School education; advanced schooling preferred.
  • Three (3) years successful experience as a school custodian.
  • Experience in boiler operation, floor maintenance, and other custodial specialties.
  • Must be able to work well with students, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Experience in supervision preferred.
  • Good health with no physical limitations. Ability to lift 60 lbs. minimum; climb using scaffolding and ladders.
  • Ability to read and understand basic instructions.
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications as approved by the Board.
Performance Responsibilities Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervises all custodians in the building and ensures duties are fulfilled.
  • Reports to the Director of Buildings & Grounds if a custodian is not fulfilling duties.
  • Provides training to all new custodians of the building.
  • Assists in assignment, scheduling, and training of custodial staff.
  • Plans, requests, and oversees all maintenance and repair work for the facility.
  • Maintains inventory and requests suitable supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Inspects work and guides performance of custodial staff on a regular basis; provides input to the Director for departmental evaluations.
Custodial Responsibilities
  • Keeps building and premises neat and clean at all times.
  • Regulates HVAC systems to provide appropriate temperatures.
  • Shovels, plows, and/or sands walkways, driveways, parking areas, and steps as appropriate.
  • Checks daily to ensure all exit doors are open and panic devices are working properly.
  • Raises the United States flag at or before 8:00 a.m. and lowers it at or after 3:30 p.m.
  • Sweeps, vacuums, and dusts classrooms; cleans corridors after school and as needed.
  • Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects restroom/locker room floors daily; cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
  • Washes windows inside and outside at least twice yearly.
  • Keeps grounds free from rubbish; performs yard‑keeping chores (grass cutting, tree trimming).
  • Makes minor building repairs (light bulbs, switches, faucet washers).
  • Reports major repairs promptly to principal and supervisor.
  • Maintains regular schedules for motors and mechanical equipment servicing.
  • Reports any property damage immediately.
  • Remains on premises during school hours and authorized non‑school hours.
  • Handles opening and closing of the building each school day.
  • Keeps inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel; requisitions replacements in advance.
  • Cooperates with Director of Operations for general maintenance program.
  • Moves furniture and equipment as required; complies with local laws for trash and waste disposal.
  • Inspects playground equipment to ensure safety.
  • Performs other duties assigned by Director of Buildings & Grounds.
Physical Demands

• Standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, climbing stairs, driving, lifting (10 lbs.), carrying (20 ft.)

Terms of Employment
  • Full‑time, year‑round position.
  • Competitive hourly rate based upon negotiated Master Contract.
