A hospital in Ottumwa, IA is seeking a Registered Nurse to join its Labor and Delivery unit. This position involves providing hands-on clinical care to patients throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the immediate postpartum period in a hospital setting.
Position OverviewThe Labor & Delivery RN is responsible for delivering safe, patient-centered nursing care during all phases of the childbirth experience, including antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care. The role requires close collaboration with physicians, anesthesia providers, and the broader care team to support both maternal and newborn outcomes.
This position calls for strong assessment skills, the ability to respond quickly to changes in patient condition, and consistent communication with patients and families during a highly sensitive and dynamic care process.
Key Responsibilities- Provide direct nursing care to patients in antepartum, labor, delivery, and postpartum phases
- Monitor maternal and fetal status throughout the labor process
- Assist with delivery procedures and postpartum recovery care
- Administer medications and treatments as ordered and monitor patient response
- Educate patients and families on labor, delivery, and postpartum expectations
- Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary team members to coordinate care
- Document patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately
- Respond to obstetric emergencies and changes in patient condition as needed
- Support safe, evidence-based labor and delivery practices
- Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program required
- Active Iowa RN license or compact license permitting practice in Iowa required
- Current Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification required
- Strong clinical assessment and communication skills required
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity obstetric environment required
