Job Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage daily accounting operations, potentially including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, and general ledger maintenance, as applicable
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules are completed accurately and timely
- Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial transactions prepared by accounting staff
- Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of the general ledger and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner
- Assist with the preparation and review of financial statements and supporting schedules
- Utilize financial systems including Microsoft Office, Spectrum, Prophix, and Power BI to support reporting and data management
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, company accounting policies, and applicable financial regulations
- Coordinate audit preparation activities and serve as a key point of contact for external auditors
- Maintain proper documentation and record retention practices for accounting transactions and financial records
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows, internal controls, and data integrity processes
- Recommend and implement process improvements that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff through coaching, training, and performance feedback
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and service-oriented team environment
- Support employee development and succession planning initiatives within the accounting function
- Assist with onboarding and training of new accounting personnel
- Assist the Financial Controller with annual budgeting, financial forecasting, and variance analysis activities
- Support financial reporting and analysis efforts to provide meaningful business insights
- Collaborate with operational and financial stakeholders to ensure accurate and timely financial information
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting – Required
- 5–10 years of progressive accounting experience – Required
- Public accounting experience – Strongly Preferred
- Experience in the construction industry, preferably water and wastewater or heavy civil construction – Preferred
- CPA license or active CPA candidate status – Preferred
- Experience with job costing and revenue recognition in a construction environment – Preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain financial information to non-financial stakeholders
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications
- Experience with accounting systems such as Spectrum or similar ERP/accounting platforms
- Familiarity with Prophix and Power BI preferred
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Ability to lead, mentor, and develop team members effectively
- Ability to work independently while fostering collaboration across departments
- Strong professional judgment and decision-making skills
