About the Role

The Manager, Statutory Accounting position leads a team responsible for the financial reporting function in accordance with Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP). This role owns the accuracy, timeliness, and quality of financial reporting and accounting deliverables — including journal entries, financial statement preparation and analysis, state filings, analytical reviews, and account reconciliations — while directly supervising and developing staff. This position offers significant ownership over specific insurance entities, regular exposure to senior leadership, and the opportunity to shape processes and people across the financial reporting function.

The Manager, Statutory Accounting position reports to the Senior Manager, Statutory Accounting and can be based out of our office in Topeka or Overland Park, Kansas, or Des Moines, Iowa. We work a hybrid schedule, offering flexibility to work both remotely and on-site.

  • Lead and oversee the SAP accounting close, ensuring journal entries and account reconciliations are completed accurately and on schedule in accordance with the accounting close calendar.
  • Work with staff to review and prepare financial statements, MD&A, and supporting schedules.
  • Analyze financial statements and results to identify trends, ensure accuracy, and communicate findings to key stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Prepare and manage state filings for 4 life insurance companies.
  • Lead the preparation and review of FABN disclosures and statutory accounting basis notes, supporting the transition of this work from external consulting to internal ownership.
  • Manage the SAP audit process, including preparation and review of audit reports and coordination of audit deliverables for 4 life insurance companies and 14 separate accounts.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for internal and external auditors, overseeing the gathering of data, preparation of schedules, and response to inquiries.
  • Research and resolve technical accounting and reporting matters, documenting conclusions in accordance with relevant accounting literature, and communicate impacts to the broader team.
  • Ensure the team's work is performed in compliance with the internal control environment and help strengthen controls where needed.
  • Train, mentor, and coach staff to build a high-performing team and support long-term talent retention.
  • Conduct performance management activities, including goal setting, feedback, and performance evaluations for direct reports.
  • Review and approve journal entries and account reconciliations prepared by staff in accordance with the accounting close calendar.
  • Identify and lead process improvement initiatives to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the financial reporting function.
  • Develop and maintain effective, collaborative relationships with internal and external customers and business partners.
  • Partner with department leadership on resource planning, workflow prioritization, and special projects.
