Position Summary:

Johnson County Community College is looking to fill a full-time faculty position in Foreign Languages to teach Spanish language courses. The qualified candidate would be expected to begin employment in August 2027. JCCC is located in Overland Park, KS, the second largest city in the state of Kansas, and part of the greater Kansas City Metro. The Kansas City Metro is known for its museums, restaurants, and music and art scenes.

JCCC is similarly dedicated to creating and maintaining a rich cultural community, with an award-winning contemporary art museum and center for the performing arts located on campus.

JCCC is looking for a full-time faculty position in the Foreign Language Department to teach Elementary, Intermediate, Heritage Speaker, Spanish for Hospitality, and Conversational Spanish courses.

The Foreign Language Department offers courses in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish and is part of the Communications Division. Many of our students are non-traditional, military veterans, immigrants, international, and first-generation college students.

The successful applicant for this job will teach the equivalent of 15 credit hours per semester in Spanish. This person will perform other duties expected of full-time faculty, including maintaining scheduled office hours; developing and revising curriculum; developing and implementing course and program assessment of student learning outcomes; participating in department, division and college meetings; serving on committees; participating in any Spanish related initiatives at JCCC;

collaborating with and observing adjunct faculty teaching Spanish and other languages; collaborating and working successfully with other full-time faculty in the Foreign Language department; and other duties as assigned. Teaching assignments could be any combination of face-to-face day or evening courses, hybrid or online, and are subject to change as needed. This person will provide extra and co-curricular opportunities for Spanish language students, participate in the planning and administration of all departmental initiatives, and participate in on-campus and off-campus events promoting languages.

* This position requires residing in Kansas or Missouri.

Required Qualifications:

* M.A. in Spanish or an MA in a related discipline with at least 18 hours of graduate work in Spanish as required by JCCC HLC criteria.

* Demonstrated 2 years of teaching experience at the post-secondary level and/or high school teaching experience.

* Demonstrated ability to teach Elementary and Intermediate level Spanish language courses.

* Demonstrated excellent communication and collaboration skills, as provided by supervisor and colleagues' letters of reference.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Ph.D. in Spanish, Language Pedagogy, Second Language Acquisition, or Linguistics with a focus on the Spanish language.

* M.A. in French or an M.A. in a related discipline with at least 18 hours of graduate work in French as required by JCCC HLC criteria.

* M.A. in German an M.A. in a related discipline with at least 18 hours of graduate work in German as required by JCCC HLC criteria.

* M.A. in Chinese or an M.A. in a related discipline with at least 18 hours of graduate work in Chinese as required by JCCC HLC criteria.

* M.A. in Japanese or an M.A. in a related discipline with at least 18 hours of graduate work in Japanese as required by JCCC HLC criteria.

* Experience in teaching heritage speakers of Spanish.

* Ability to work well and collaborate with others.

* Ability to work independently on departmental initiatives.

* Familiarity with proficiency-based language learning.
