Mechanical Engineer – HVAC & Plumbing
Contract-to-Hire Opportunity
Location: Overland Park, MO
The Mechanical Engineer – HVAC & Plumbing is responsible for the engineering analysis, design, and coordination of HVAC and plumbing systems for a variety of complex facilities. This role supports projects delivered through both traditional and alternative delivery methods and requires collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
Key Responsibilities- Perform engineering and design of HVAC and plumbing systems for facilities delivered under:
- Traditional Design‑Bid‑Build
- Alternative Conceptual‑Bid‑Build project delivery methods
- Support projects across a wide range of facility types, including:
- Water and wastewater treatment facilities
- Power generation buildings
- Electrical substations
- Design systems for diverse functional areas, including but not limited to:
- Wastewater treatment process buildings
- Administrative and office spaces
- Warehouses and maintenance facilities
- Workshops and laboratories
- Chemical storage and handling areas
- Electrical distribution centers
- Low‑and‑medium‑voltage switch gear rooms
- Pump and equipment areas
- Conduct energy audits and energy efficiency evaluations, including:
- Engineering studies
- System performance reviews
- Energy compliance and efficiency calculations
- Perform code reviews and apply applicable building and mechanical codes to ensure facility compliance
- Support sustainable design initiatives, including the application of LEED and other sustainability strategies
- Develop and review technical calculations, drawings, and specifications
- Review technical submittals and participate in bid and contractor review processes
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure quality, constructability, and compliance
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (required)
- Minimum of 8 years of related mechanical engineering experience, with a focus on HVAC and plumbing systems
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of mechanical engineering design principles
Working knowledge of, or experience with, the following codes, standards, tools, and systems is required:
- International Codes Council (ICC) suite of codes
- ASHRAE handbooks and standards
- ASPE design handbooks
- SMACNA standards
- NFPA standards
- Computer‑generated HVAC load calculations, energy modeling, and equipment sizing
- Technical submittal review and bid review processes
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Bluebeam Revu
- Revit (3D modeling)
- Experience with large‑scale water‑cooled chiller systems
- Self‑motivated with a strong sense of accountability
- Demonstrated problem‑solving and analytical skills
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities
- Results‑driven with a focus on quality and continuous improvement
- Effective listener and collaborative team member
