Overview
The Engineering Technician supports electrical substation design, drafting, testing, and field implementation activities. This role works closely with engineers, designers, and construction teams to develop technical drawings, update documentation, assist with field data collection, and support commissioning efforts for transmission and distribution projects.
The Engineering Technician plays a key role in ensuring accurate documentation, compliance with standards, and smooth coordination between engineering and field teams.
Key Responsibilities- Design & Drafting Support
- Prepare and revise substation drawings including single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and grounding plans.
- Assist engineers with CAD drafting using AutoCAD, Micro Station, or similar platforms.
- Maintain drawing logs, revisions, and document control records.
- Technical Support
- Support preparation of material take-offs and equipment lists.
- Assist with relay panel layouts and protection & control schematics.
- Perform quality checks on drawings and documentation prior to issue.
- Field & Site Support
- Conduct site visits to gather field data and verify as-built conditions.
- Support construction teams with drawing clarifications.
- Assist with equipment inspections and commissioning documentation.
- Documentation & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with NEC, NESC, IEEE, and utility standards.
- Maintain technical records, test reports, and commissioning documentation.
- Support redline markups and as-built updates.
- Associate degree or technical diploma in Electrical Technology, Engineering Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3+ years of experience supporting substation, power delivery, or electrical infrastructure projects.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Micro Station, or similar drafting software.
- Basic understanding of substation equipment (transformers, breakers, relays, grounding systems).
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and construction drawings.
- Experience supporting high-voltage substations (69kV–500kV).
- Familiarity with protection & control systems.
- Exposure to SCADA or relay settings documentation.
- OSHA 10 certification.
