Summary
The Corrosion Engineer reports to the Sr. Manager of Corrosion Services. This position involves diverse involvement in all corrosion control related aspects of the company’s business. This position requires travel to field locations and regulatory agencies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provides technical support for Corrosion Managers, Corrosion Specialists, Corrosion Technicians, Corrosion Engineers, Engineering/Construction/Project Managers/Encroachments, and Operations with corrosion control technical guidance/training, pipeline assessments, evaluation, corrosion control designs
- Assists in the management of Company Corrosion Control SOPs covering internal, external, design, mitigation, compliance, and defect evaluations
- Involved in performing root cause failure investigations on pipeline failures and develops programs for preventing future failures
- Assists with communication and management of PHMSA remedial work plans, regulatory interaction, and related activities
- Keep up-to-date on latest proposed federal pipeline regulations and recommend changes to company SOPs operating practices and programs
- Evaluates corrosion control related data and performance metrics, maintains reports and monitoring of key performance indicators
The following reflect common duties performed by the Corrosion Engineer:
- Provides technical expertise and guidance to Corrosion Services, and Operations and Engineering for the design, implementation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of the Company’s corrosion control/cathodic protection assets.
- Participates in new pipeline/facility design and commissioning. Assists in the preparation of designs for facility modifications and incorporation of new equipment. Is able to facilitate installation including modifications to designs to meet functional requirements. Is able to coordinate and provide leadership in the commissioning of significant facilities involving multiple groups including vendors, suppliers, engineering design and construction, Corrosion Services and Area personnel.
- The Corrosion Engineer has advanced qualifications and experience in the following subjects and/or tasks related to the corrosion control field:
- corrosion control regulations;
- external/internal/atmospheric corrosion monitoring and mitigation procedures and processes.
- technical support, training and qualification/evaluation of corrosion technicians;
- design of cathodic protection systems;
- working knowledge of corrosion control databases and field data collection devices;
- corrosion and pipeline data management and integration;
- specifications for contract corrosion control services;
- SOP, Engineering Standards, and Best Practices related to corrosion control practices.
- Ability to consistently analyze and resolve corrosion control issues involving multiple components, personnel, and operations;
- Knowledge, skill and ability to document activities and inspections as well as review same to discern issues with accuracy of data and information contained in reports prepared by others;
- Knowledge, skill and ability to Interpret and apply the company’s procedures with an appreciation of underlying industry codes and standards and government regulations;
- Knowledge, skill and ability to defend the company’s technical and procedural positions related to corrosion control activities and represent the company in an agency audit, inspection, or enforcement action;
- Specific responsibilities related to the support and QA/QC of work done by Operations Corrosion Technicians includes but is not limited to the following:
- Provide technical support related to external corrosion control monitoring and mitigation with in-depth knowledge of rectifiers, test points, bonds, close interval survey, current demand, AC interference, etc.
- Cathodic protection system design and installation to include impressed current and galvanic anode systems; deep and shallow anode ground beds
- Cathodic protection and AC testing to include interference testing, evaluation, and mitigation
