This opportunity with Black & Veatch offers the chance to collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams within the Technology, Commercial & Industrial Market Sector, supporting Distributed Network projects such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Clean Transportation, and Networks & Communications, while building critical structural infrastructure for today’s and tomorrow’s challenges. Structural Engineering Technicians contribute to the design, analysis, and detailing of structural components and systems that support these advanced industrial and commercial facilities.

The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Staff Structural Engineering Technician plays a key role in supporting the development of high‑quality engineering deliverables for these complex structural infrastructure projects. Under close supervision, this position performs technical tasks requiring advanced knowledge of structural engineering principles and practices, with a focus on creating and modifying structural models, drawings, and details using advanced techniques in industry‑standard design tools such as Autodesk Revit, Autodesk AutoCAD, and Bentley Micro Station.

The technician provides technical guidance and may offer direction to other engineering professionals and technicians to ensure quality and consistency across project outputs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act in a project engineering technician capacity.
  • Support engineering and design teams by developing and modifying technical deliverables under general direction.
  • Apply foundational engineering principles and established design practices to create moderately complex design concepts and solutions.
  • Utilize digital tools and design software (CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables.
  • Provide technical guidance and may offer direction to other engineering professionals and technicians to ensure quality and consistency across project outputs.
  • Apply knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes and BV policies and procedures.
  • Review project requirements and accurately determine the correct format and contents of the required deliverables.
  • Apply BV Quality Program to deliverables, demonstrate personal accuracy, and support continuous improvement and change management efforts.
  • Review design inputs to ensure consistency and compliance with the specific codes and standards suitable for the project.
  • Apply basic engineering principles and established design practices in developing moderately complex design concepts and deliverables; make decisions regarding deliverables and input interpretation.
  • Handle difficult technical assignments within an area of expertise and provide technical guidance to other professionals.
  • Perform design calculations, detailed material quantities and estimates, and records.
  • Review the deliverables of others.
  • Define work assignments and maintain schedules.
  • Program control systems or participate in other plant start‑up activities associated with a specialized area of expertise.
  • Coordinate with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information necessary for design development.
  • Support field activities, focusing on internal client needs while understanding external client interests and drivers.
  • Proactively seek and share knowledge of the latest technologies and processes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Diploma or Certificate required;
    Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Typically a minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements (e.g., criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search).
Work Environment / Physical Demands
  • Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
