WSP is searching for an Early Career Substation Drafter in Billings, MT (locations considered: Boise, ; Denver, CO; Overland Park, KS). The role involves contributing to the Power Delivery Mountain Civil Structural Substation Team by providing technical design and CADD support under general supervision.
Responsibilities- Assist in collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, structural concepts, blueprints, schematics, and other sources to support drafting and design activities.
- Use 3D CADD software to assist with basic design details and prepare drawings requiring a high degree of precision.
- Provide basic technical design assistance ensuring proper illustration, fit, form, and function with geometric dimensioning, tolerance, and quantity calculations.
- Verify calculations, design, change orders, interpret contract plans and specifications, and raise any issues or technical problems for resolution.
- Work with cross‑functional teams in executing project work.
- Ensure plans adhere to city code, state, and federal regulations.
- Learn, understand, and implement client’s CAD standards, practices, and procedures.
- Apply industry standard concrete, rebar, and structural steel detailing practices.
- Prepare multiple versions of designs for review by engineers.
- Specify dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements.
- Collaborate with the engineer‑in‑charge and other technical professionals on project phases, segments, checks, and tasks.
- Complete training on assigned tasks.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of current drafting and design support practices.
- Communicate effectively in English, both written and oral, to work with team members.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- High School Diploma.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant post‑education experience in drafting and design support.
- Familiarity with drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
- At least 3 years of drafting experience with AutoCAD and/or Micro Station, with the ability to produce shop drawings.
- Ability to produce steel and foundation plans, sections, and elevation views.
- Ability to prepare structural bill of materials.
- Familiarity with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
- Excellent research and evaluation skills with an analytical mindset.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with others and presenting ideas to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Self‑leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and comply with company policies.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and abiding by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements.
- Associate’s Degree in a closely related discipline.
- Professional licensure or certification.
- Experience with Autodesk Inventor and Vault software.

Compensation: Expected Salary (Colorado only): $55,900 - $83,900.
