This Opportunity: WSP is initiating a search for a Senior Electrical Engineer (Generation) to join our Power & Energy team in Overland Park, KS. The following location will also be considered:

This position provides subject matter technical support and leadership for due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, improvement, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale projects in the public and private sector. Tasks include research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, power distribution, power regulation, renewable energy, as well as protection and control systems in a wide variety of contexts.
The role provides guidance to PMs and managers to address risk, innovation, and future-ready opportunities and ensures that responsibilities are delivered with quality that meets or exceeds industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
- Produce, coordinate, review and/or approve electrical design plans for complex power plant projects
- Apply high-level electrical engineering techniques to support all project phases, from preliminary design through commissioning support and record drawings
- Support generation project scoping, budgeting, and proposals
- Oversee the development of power plant electrical drawings (one lines, breaker control schematics, bus duct layouts, equipment elevations, cable schedules, etc.)
- Oversee the development of equipment specifications (e.g., power and control cables, unit auxiliary transformers, isolated phase bus ducts, generator circuit breakers, power distribution centers, etc.)
- Lead larger-scale electrical engineering projects, ensuring contributors know their responsibilities and deadlines, and manage project budgets, hours, and expenses while ensuring quality
- Assist with engineering review of permit applications, engineering design plans and specifications, standby plans and contracts, and periodic construction inspections to ensure compliance with regulations and sound engineering practice
- Meet with client, vendor, and/or subcontractor personnel to discuss project status and explain engineering decisions and compromises
- Ensure technical reports and presentations effectively explain research, findings, and recommendations
- Maintain a high level of quality and responsiveness to client requirements in alignment with applicable standards
- Develop a client base for providing high level electrical engineering services including identifying additional business development opportunities
- Mentor staff to support their growth and professional development
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
- 10+ years of relevant post-education experience as a power engineer providing design deliverables for capital projects in power generation
- Professional Engineer license required (multiple states preferred)
- Highly proficient with power engineering principles, practices, processes, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues
- High proficiency with power plant infrastructure design involving Combined Cycle and Simple Cycle Gas Turbines or Heat Recovery Steam Generators
- Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and program/construction management; including coordination with engineers in adjacent disciplines such as mechanical and civil structural engineering
- Strong knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements (IEEE, NEC, NEMA, IEC, etc.)
