Senior Mechanical Engineer – Facilities Division
WSP in the United States, Facilities Division, is seeking a Senior level Mechanical Engineer to join our teams in Boise, Idaho;
Madison, Wisconsin;
Austin or Houston, Texas; and Overland Park, Kansas, with the flexibility to work remotely if the right candidate is identified. This role focuses on the design and engineering of food & beverage, federal, and industrial facilities, including new construction, renovations, and optimization projects.
- Collect, compile, and analyze data from site surveys, blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to support project development, design, and construction.
- Apply advanced mechanical engineering techniques to identify improvements for building and infrastructure projects, covering concept development, preliminary and final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
- Conduct comprehensive investigations and inspections of site conditions, equipment, and mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
- Develop construction and installation plans, specifications, cost estimates, safety and phasing plans, and update infrastructure layouts in coordination with owners, other disciplines, and sub-consultants.
- Manage mechanical design and construction from inception to completion for rehabilitation, reconstruction, new builds, and operational specifications.
- Lead the implementation of advanced technologies, monitoring devices, and design standards to ensure proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems.
- Provide technical assistance on temperature control systems, air distribution, hydronics, and plumbing systems.
- Direct larger-scale projects, overseeing budgets, timelines, and subcontractors, and ensuring quality and client satisfaction.
- Review permits, design plans, contracts, and waste management plans to confirm compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Engage with public and private entities to address engineering and construction challenges.
- Create technical reports and presentations that explain findings and recommendations.
- Identify business development opportunities and build a client base for mechanical engineering services.
- Mentor staff and foster professional growth.
- Stay current with mechanical engineering techniques and industry practices.
- Collaborate with cross‑disciplinary teams on federally, state, and locally funded projects and business development efforts.
- Adhere to responsible and ethical decision‑making and WSP’s Code of Conduct.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, and utility piping design, with the ability to exercise independent judgment.
- Engineer license required (multi‑state preferred).
- Strong knowledge of heating, chilled water, steam, compressed air, refrigeration, natural gas, and high‑pressure water systems.
- Advanced proficiency in mechanical engineering principles, practices, design processes, and permitting.
- Proficiency in building and infrastructure design and project management for rehabilitation, reconstruction, and new construction.
- Deep understanding of mechanical engineering and construction laws, codes, regulations, and record‑keeping requirements.
- Excellent technical calculation skills and the ability to compare plans against regulations.
- Experience conducting inspections and investigations of construction and design elements, applying applicable policies.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
- Demonstrated leadership and the ability to guide mid‑level to senior team members while maintaining QA/QC standards.
- Proficiency in technical writing, office automation, load calculations, AutoCAD, CAM, spreadsheets, and related software.
- Experience reviewing documents and preparing complex technical deliverables.
- Excellent critical thinking and problem‑solving capabilities to analyze data and propose efficient solutions.
