The Respiratory Therapist coordinates and delivers high‑quality, patient‑centered respiratory care in accordance with the nature and specific requirements of the department, and consistent with the scope and standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty. As a vital part of the patient care team, the Respiratory Therapist performs a variety of diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures and monitors patients receiving invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation.
Key Responsibilities- Under the general supervision of the RT Supervisor or Team Leader, perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures ordered by a physician.
- Administer medical gas, aerosol therapy, obtain and analyze blood specimens, perform patient testing, and operate and maintain various types of respiratory and cardiopulmonary equipment.
- Provide mechanical ventilation and maintain artificial airways, assist with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, provide patient education, and monitor equipment and patient response to therapy.
- Complete documentation of in‑patient and departmental records, clean equipment, and maintain safety and infection control practices.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program (required).
- Current Respiratory Therapist license from the State Board for Respiratory Care (required).
- NBRC RRT certification (required).
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) obtained within 30 days of employment start date (required).
- American Heart Association or American Red Cross ACLS preferred upon hire.
- ACLS and NRP required within 6 months of hire.
- One year of recent clinical experience preferred.
Overland Park Regional Medical Center is a 340‑+ bed facility offering acute medical services, including a Level II Trauma Center and the only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Johnson County. We also have an accredited Stroke and Chest Pain Center, a Maternal Fetal Health Center, a Level III NICU, and four emergency rooms.
