Traffic Street Lighting Technician

The City of Overland Park has a full-time Traffic Street Lighting Technician position available in the Public Works Department.

Location:

Overland Park, KS.

Summary

Performs field and shop maintenance on City owned street lights and related equipment. Maintains traffic signals and participates in emergency operations such as snow removal.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintains City owned street lights by performing routine maintenance and repair work.
  • Diagnoses system failures using electrical testing equipment.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repair on signalized intersections and assists with construction of new signals and modification of existing installations.
  • Upgrades indications (LED) and control buttons (ADA) to comply with new Federal standards.
  • Reviews proposed plans for new street lighting and makes suggestions on improved equipment and installation methods.
  • Visually inspects installation of cable, junction boxes, pipe and connections, poles and completes work management system data entries.
  • Responds in support of citywide emergencies such as flood, storm, major traffic accidents and snow removal operations (including operation of plow truck and 55 bucket truck).
  • Coordinates pole-knock-downs and cable cuts with team members and performs routine maintenance and repair of poles, arms, heads, control cabinets and electrical leads.
  • Performs underground wiring troubleshooting, excavates and repairs as needed.
  • Works required days and hours including regular business hours or shifts to meet communication and performance requirements.
  • Maintains punctuality, attendance, and meets all performance deadlines and break scheduling.
Requirements
  • High school education with additional formal courses in basic electrical wiring, electronics, operation and repair of electrical systems or a combination of formal education and experience.
  • Associate's degree in Electricity/Electronics preferred.
  • Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tanker endorsements within 12 months of hire and an insurable driving record.
  • Certification in bucket truck and digger derrick operation.
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Signs and Markings I.
  • IMSA Roadway Lighting.
Experience

Two years experience in electrical repair of street lights or an equivalent level of experience.
