Description

The City of Overland Park has a full-time Street Lighting Technician position available in the Public Works Department.

Summary

Performs field and shop maintenance on City owned street lights and related equipment. Performs maintenance activities to include; troubleshooting failures, replacing parts, repairing components and/or replacing light systems. Utilizes various specialized vehicles, equipment, and tools. Assists in the maintenance of electronic traffic signals. Participates in emergency operations, including snow removal, as required.

Duties And Responsibilities

Maintains City owned street lights by performing routine maintenance and repair work. Diagnoses system failures using electrical testing equipment.

Performs minor maintenance and repair on signalized intersections (no-controller problems; assists with construction of new signals and modification of existing installations. Upgrades indications (LED) and control buttons (ADA) to comply with new Federal standards.

Reviews proposed plans for new street lighting from Public Works and Planning/Development within an assigned District. Makes suggestions on improved equipment and installation methods. Checks for omissions, improper lay out and inferior equipment.

Assists street lighting inspector on inspection of installation of new street lighting installations. Visually inspect installation of cable, junction boxes, pipe and connections, poles. J-boxes, control centers, and wiring connections.

Utilizes computers to enter and extract data from work management systems.

Responds in support of citywide emergencies such as flood, storm, major traffic accidents, and snow removal operations. Operates a plow truck during snow operations, as assigned.

Coordinates pole-knock-downs and cable cuts with team members to assure safe and expedient repairs within an assigned district. Performs routine maintenance and repair of poles, arms, heads, control cabinets, and electrical leads within an assigned district. Operates 55  bucket truck to repair 40  street lights. Troubleshoots and repairs underground wiring problems. Locates suspected wiring failures using electronic scan tools, excavates and makes needed repairs.

The employee must work the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks. Must be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to communicate with subordinates, supervisors, customers, vendors and any other persons or organization with whom interaction is required to accomplish work and employer goals.

The employee must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines; beginning and ending assignments on time; and scheduled work breaks, where applicable.

Requirements

EDUCATION &SPECIAL LICENSE(S)/

CERTIFICATIONS:

High school education with additional, formal courses in basic electrical wiring, electronics, operation and repair of electrical systems or a combination of formal education and experience.

Associate's degree in Electricity/Electronics preferred.

Possession of an appropriate, valid drivers license. Must have and maintain a Class A commercial driver s license with air brake and tanker endorsements within 12 months of hire. Must maintain an insurable driving record.

Must have the following certifications within 12 months of employment

With The City
  • Certification in bucket truck and digger derrick operation.
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Signs and Markings I.
  • IMSA Roadway Lighting.
Experience

Two years experience in electrical repair of street lights or an equivalent level of experience.
