Schedule:
40 hours per week.
Vacancies exist in the Department of Public Works and Transportation, Bureau of Utilities, Pumping Division.
A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below. Current and future vacancies occurring within this class may be filled from the list of eligible applicants.
Responsibilities- Diagnose and troubleshoot problems with grinder pumps.
- Diagnose problems in pumping stations by using OIT screen with the ability to navigate through the program.
- Performs regular, periodic inspections of sewerage pumping stations and their components.
- Repairs, maintains, installs, and inspects mechanical and electrical equipment such as pumps, motors, valves and control systems.
- Tests telemetering alarm systems.
- Tests air monitoring meters.
- Performs major repairs, installations, and overhauls of pumps, as well as grinder pumps, and greases pumps.
- Replaces packing.
- Cleans and pulls debris from pumps.
- Inspects right angle drives.
- Checks engine batteries and replaces batteries as required.
- Pulls and cleans sump pumps.
- Runs station pump tests.
- Performs general plant maintenance on pumping stations, their grounds, and other bureau facilities.
- Leads laborers and others in the cleaning of wet wells.
- Provides guidance to lesser skilled mechanics.
- Responds to bureau emergencies and alarms of equipment malfunctions at pumping stations including grinder pump alarms.
- Participates in safety training exercises.
- Documents and maintains records of works performed.
- Reviews and completes work check lists for each station or plant.
- Prepares work orders.
Performs other related duties as required.

Four years' experience in the repair, maintenance, and installation of mechanical, electrical, and electronic components used in sewerage pumping stations.
Related training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years for the required experience.
Licenses and CertificatesPossession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
Some positions may require possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class B or class A Maryland driver's license and a current Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. (License may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.)
Examination ProcedureApplicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes. Employees in this classification may be assigned to a work shift which includes nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
Employees in this classification are subject to call to duty in emergencies, and may be required to work overtime as needed.
The work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, tools, and equipment. Work requires exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as raw sewerage, confined space, adverse weather, and live electrical wires.
Medical Examination and Employment Background InvestigationApplicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education certification and fingerprint checks.
