SUMMARY:

Focus on the academic, career, and personal/social domains of each child. These domains provide essential skills to help students and parents make decisions and prepare for further education of each child.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

These statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.
  • Assist school staff and consult with parents concerning student class placement.
  • Identify children at risk and respond to their needs by a referral process for special services.
  • Assess learning needs and know where to find help through special programs or tutoring.
  • Work with students to enhance motivation to learn.
  • Provide guidance activities, which are regular and ongoing throughout the school year.
  • Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to problems such as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.
  • Assist students in the development of good study skills, test-taking and organizational skills.
  • Provide activities to help students become aware of the world of work/career interests.
  • Inform parents of the state test dates scheduled and distribute the guides from the state department.
  • Complete orientation and transition activities with Kindergarten Klinic and Sixth Grade Center.
  • Consult with staff and parents concerning student promotion, retention and placement for the upcoming year.
  • Prepare for the needed resources and testing materials for the special services, gifted, and other forms through the main administration offices.
  • Consult with the Owasso Community Resources concerning needs in the student population for school supplies, food, and clothing, utility bills, holiday gifts, glasses and other services, which would benefit the child.
  • Develop a climate of trust between the staff, parent, community and administration concerning the counseling program and counselor.
  • Administer or monitor group tests.
  • Assists with special projects.
  • All other duties as assigned by the administrator.
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    None

    QUALIFICATION:

    EDUCATION and/or

    EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field
  • Master's Degree in Counseling or related field
  • Valid Oklahoma School Counselor Certificate
  • EXTRA DUTY:
    In addition to the 180-day contract, will work 10 additional days on +10 Extra Duty Contract. Will work additional hours as necessary on 5% Extra Duty Contract.

    KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
    Computer literate; excellent written and oral communication ability; strong knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and laws applicable to education and special education. Ability to follow all district policies and procedures. Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done. Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators. Ability to work without supervision, and work as a team player.

    Ability to document records accurately. Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects students, families, and employees. Ability to listen effectively.

    LANGUAGE

    SKILLS:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret English language including common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
