** JOB SUMMARY

* SUMMARY:
** Under general supervision, feeds and cares for animals at the Animal Services Center; responsible for micro chipping, vaccinating, and administering humane euthanasia to animals; responsible for cleaning and sanitizing animal kennels, pens, and holding cages.

* ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
*** Provide and ensure the humane welfare and care of animals by providing food and water in accordance with established policies and practices.
* Maintain a healthy environment by properly cleaning and disinfecting animal cages in accordance with established disease control policies and practices.
* Humanely euthanize animals and maintain accurate written records of controlled substances in accordance with Federal laws.
* Respond to and provide appropriate medical treatment such as: taking vitals, administering medications, and first aid to animals.
* Receive animals and maintain associated paperwork such as an inventory log, animal identification and location records, and related medical treatment records.
* Perform minor medical procedures including but not limited to vaccinating and micro chipping.

JOB FUNCTIONS:
*** Observe animals to detect indications of disease and respond according as defined in established policies and practices.
* Maintain grounds, repair or replace broken kennel gates, kennel dividers, cables and pulleys.
* Remove litter and debris, wash feeding/watering utensils, and equipment, launder towels, blankets, beds, etc.
* Maintain stock and storage rooms in a neat and organized manner, stocking inventory of food, litter, cleaning supplies etc.
* Perform minor equipment/kennel repairs.

* MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
*
* Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
* Knowledge of the principles and practices of disease control.
* Knowledge of the symptoms of animal diseases, basic animal behavior, care, and first aid.
* Knowledge of the methods and techniques of performing humane euthanasia to a variety of animals.
* Knowledge of the breeds behavior and husbandry of domestic and wild animals.
* Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with work associates and the public.
* Skill in communicating with other city employees and the public by oral and written means.
* Skill in the administration of euthanasia to animals.
* Skill in managing multiple tasks.
* Ability to work effectively when surrounded by loud noise.
* Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and make fine discriminations in sound.
* Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to seeing, sorting, typing, writing, euthanasia, dragging, carrying, kneeling and animal restraint.
* Ability to lift or exert forces equivalent to lifting up to 50 pounds.
* Ability to operate a variety of equipment including but not limited to motor vehicles, water hoses, restraining equipment and euthanasia equipment such as needles, drugs and tourniquets.
* Ability to read labels on medical containers.
* Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
* Ability to keep and prepare accurate records.
* Ability to work independent of specific instruction.
* Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including, but not limited to PC, and copier.
* Incumbent is subject to chemical hazards, dust, odor, zoonotic and mites hazards.
Qualifying
Education and Experience:
* High school diploma or equivalent.
* Certified Euthanasia Technician Certification in accordance with Chapter 821 of the Texas Health and Safety Code.
