SUMMARY:
The primary duty of all mechanics is to keep all school vehicles, especially school buses, in good mechanical order.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: these statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.
  • Answers and responds to calls on garage phone and on radio transmission from transportation office and/or bus drivers in a timely manner.
  • Completes minor mechanical jobs involved in basic vehicle service including but not limited to transmission service, oil changes, and tune ups.
  • Opens garage and gates each morning.
  • Fuels buses as needed.
  • Start buses prior to routes as needed.
  • Must be "on call" when buses are on off hours trips or at activities.
  • Insures job responsibilities are met competently and within established deadlines.
  • Assists with special projects.
  • All other duties as assigned by the director.
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    None.


    QUALIFICATION:

    EDUCATION and/or

    EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of relevant or combination of education and experience.
  • Diesel experience required.
  • Computer diagnostics experience preferred.
  • KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
    Computer literate. Excellent written and oral communication ability. Ability to follow all district policies and procedures. Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done. Must understand all phases of school bus fleet maintenance including but not limited to engine repair, hydraulic systems, transmission and drivetrain, and air brake systems. Knowledge of parts and purchasing procedures.

    Ability to maintain consistent and punctual attendance. Ability to provide own tools. Must be able to properly complete Oklahoma State Department of Education reports. Ability to work without supervision, and work as a team player. Ability to document records accurately. Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects employees. Ability to listen effectively.


    LANGUAGE

    SKILLS:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret English language. Ability to communicate in a professional manner concerning mechanical repairs.


    MATHEMATICAL

    SKILLS:

    Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts and mathematical operations to essential functions of the position.


    REASONING ABILITY:
    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.


    LICENSES and REGISTRATIONS:
    Must hold an Oklahoma Commercial Driver's License Class B with no airbrake restriction.
