Job Description

The Guidance Counselor supports Job Corps students in developing the personal, social, educational, and career-readiness skills necessary for success in training and the workplace.

This position provides individual and group counseling, assists students with establishing career and educational goals, supports positive behavioral development, and helps students identify realistic solutions to personal, educational, and career-related challenges.

The Guidance Counselor also serves as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, appropriate workplace behavior, dependability, and effective interpersonal skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct initial counseling sessions with students.
  • Assist students in establishing educational, career, and employment goals.
  • Help students identify available educational and vocational training opportunities.
  • Develop appropriate plans to help students achieve their career objectives.
  • Interpret assessment and test results to identify student interests, strengths, weaknesses, and aptitudes.
  • Provide individual and group counseling and guidance.
  • Help students develop effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Encourage students to identify realistic alternatives to behaviors that have previously been ineffective.
Behavioral & Student Support
  • Promote the development of positive social and employability skills.
  • Model appropriate workplace conduct, professionalism, timeliness, appearance, and behavior.
  • Participate in the Center Behavioral Management System (BMS) and/or Student Code of Conduct (SCC) program as required.
  • Provide positive intervention and behavioral guidance to students.
  • Provide behavior-modification counseling for students identified as at risk.
  • Support students in developing the interpersonal and workplace skills necessary for long-term employment success.
  • Participate in the coordination of the Center's Mental Health Program.
  • Meet regularly with the Mental Health Consultant to discuss student needs, intervention strategies, and behavioral concerns.
  • Collaborate with appropriate staff regarding students identified as at risk.
  • Participate in staff training involving counseling techniques, group counseling methods, and student identification and assessment tools.
Program Monitoring & Compliance
  • Monitor the quality and effectiveness of educational, vocational, and residential training components using established measures.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to appropriate managers and staff.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable Job Corps Policy and Requirements Handbook (ePRH) requirements.
  • Follow all Center safety policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions, unsafe acts, and accidents to appropriate Center leadership.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • College coursework must include at least 15 semester hours of social services-related instruction.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in counseling or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to provide effective individual and group guidance.
  • Ability to work effectively with young adults from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to collaborate with mental health professionals and other members of a multidisciplinary student-support team.

Compensation: $27.30 per hour

Annual Salary: Approximately $56,784
