Environmental Compliance, Environmental Engineer

All applicants should have availability for work scheduled 32–40 hours per week.
PurposeCo‑ops will provide assistance to Health, Safety, Sustainability, and Environmental (HSSE) Branch engineers and scientists on a variety of projects, including environmental compliance support, discharge assessment, overflow reporting, facility inspections, and recordkeeping.
OverviewThis position will be part of the Environmental Section within MSD’s Compliance Services Division (CSD). The student co‑op will assist one or more Environmental Program Managers/subject matter experts managing the following programs:
- Air quality & permit compliance (Title V/Permit‑by‑Rules)
- Water quality and discharge assessment (NPDES permits, Stormwater, Bioassessments, overflow reporting, etc.)
- Spill prevention control and countermeasures (SPCC) compliance
- Due diligence and site remediation
- RCRA waste management (hazardous, non‑hazardous, universal wastes)
- Pollution prevention
- Energy efficiency
The co‑op will learn various components of environmental compliance, including:
- Air permitting (Title V & Permit‑by‑Rule)
- Water quality & NPDES compliance
- Oil pollution prevention and SPCC rule requirements
- Chemical inventory reporting (Tier II)
- Stormwater pollution prevention
- Environmental compliance auditing/inspections
- Sustainability initiatives
- Public speaking
- Database management
- Sampling methods
- Work closely with environmental staff and other MSD divisions.
- Complete primary project tasks and assist with related tasks as needed.
- Participate in all facets of regulatory compliance program management during the term.
- Salary for the student for the period May–August.
- Student will work in the MSD Administration Building, 1st floor.
- Receive training on proper use of personal protective equipment in operational areas.
- Maintain basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

- Undergraduate student
- Major in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Chemistry, Biology, or closely related field
- Preferred skills:
Excel, Word, AutoCAD or GIS
- U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or non‑citizen with proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
- Individuals under eighteen require a work permit.
- Enrolled in an accredited institution.
- Must submit a City job application.
- Must pass a drug screen and background check.
