Job Summary
The Lead Pharmacy Technician carries added responsibilities along with functioning as an pharmacy technician. This position requires the technician to train new employees, compile administrative reports, and facilitate inpatient hospital and/or infusion center initiatives. It is expected the Lead Pharmacy Technician will set an example for all technicians and be a leader within the pharmacy. Strives for superior performance by consistently providing a product or service to leadership and staff that is recognized as ultimately contributing to the patient and family experience.

Job Responsibilities
- Engages patients by greeting them and helping with products and services where applicable and appropriate. Resolves patient issues and answers questions to ensure a positive patient experience under direction of a pharmacist.
- Models and shares pharmacy‑related best practices with all team members to foster a positive working environment.
- Assists Pharmacy Manager and Staff Pharmacist in developing and maintaining good relationships with the local caregiver community, including physicians, nurses, and other health care providers.
- Under the supervision by the pharmacist, assist in the practice of pharmacy, in accordance with state, federal, and hospital policy.
- Performs duties as assigned by Pharmacy Manager, Staff Pharmacist and Pharmacist in charge, including utilizing pharmacy and hospital electronic systems to enter patient and drug information, ensuring information is entered correctly, filling prescriptions and verifying medicine is correct.
- Assists pharmacists in scheduling and maintaining workflow.
- Reports immediately medication‑related errors to pharmacist on duty and adheres to policies and procedures in relation to pharmacy errors.
- Handles telephone calls that do not require personal attention of the pharmacist, including those to physicians and other providers.
- Responsible for implementing new technology, workflow process, and operational workflows.
- Leads Pharmacy Department inventory management activities, such as ordering (in conjunction with pharmacy buyer where applicable), unpacking, checking, and storing shipment of pharmaceuticals. Assists and supports Pharmacy Manager and Staff Pharmacist in analyzing and seeking to improve pharmacy financial, customer service and inventory performance data.
- The Lead Pharmacy Technician role is comprehensive and includes responsibilities for drug purchasing, drug shortage management, drug recall audits, completion of controlled substance audits, oversight of USP Chapter compliance, and components of technician training.
- Assists pharmacist on duty with controlled substance audit responsibilities, including daily controlled substance inventory discrepancy resolution and review of monthly diversion analytics reports.
- USP Chapter compliance responsibilities include evaluation of guideline compliance at the local level and education of other technicians when procedures change.
- Assesses baseline skill level for new technicians and trains new technicians on pharmacy operations at the local hospital level.
- Assists with exterior and interior maintenance by ensuring the Pharmacy Department is stocked with adequate supplies, clean, neat, and orderly in condition and appearance.
- Completes special assignments and other tasks as assigned by the Pharmacy Manager and/or Director of Pharmacy.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and supports hospital mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality statements, corporate compliance plan, customer service standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
- Supports other pharmacy technicians by filling in when needed.
- Serves as USP 795, 797, and or 800 designated person as assigned.
