RN (Nurse) Emergency Care at Yale New Haven Health
The Registered Nurse (RN) in Emergency Care provides patient-centered nursing services guided by professional standards and ethical practices, emphasizing leadership, collaboration, and culturally competent care. This role involves comprehensive nursing processes including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of patient care in high-acuity neuroscience, orthopedic, and neuro ICU settings. The RN must uphold professional performance standards, incorporate evidence-based practices, and ensure safe, effective, and ethical nursing care within the legal framework of nursing practice.

As an integral member of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) healthcare team, the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) upholds the YNHHS mission, vision, values and strategic initiatives to provide the highest level of patient centered care. The RN practices professional nursing as a registered nurse within the legal and ethical framework established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model.
Practice
The RN provides care that:
- Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with the patient and family, encompassing an understanding and integration of cultural and diversity into practice.
- Communicates and works collaboratively with the patient, family and health care team members.
- Respects the patient's values, preferences, expressed needs and knowledge of the healthcare situation in holistic data collection, in formulating health care outcomes and in the evaluation process.
- Standards of Practice:
The RN utilizes the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, evaluation) to provide competent nursing care. - Standards of Professional Performance:
The RN engages in ethical, culturally congruent, communicative, collaborative, leadership, educational, evidence-based, quality, resource-efficient, and environmentally safe nursing practice.
- Education:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred. - Experience:
N/A - Licensure:
Valid State of Connecticut Registered Nurse License. - Special
Skills:
BLS required. - Proficient in computer software, including electronic patient records, and use of internet for literature searches regarding patient care.
- Ortho/Spine Unit:
Treats patients before and after surgery for total joint, hip, knees, shoulder, spinal fusion, fragility hip fractures, and joint infections. - Neuroscience & Epilepsy/Neuro Stepdown:
General Neuro, Neuro surgical, stroke and epilepsy. Stepdown area higher level of care. - Neuro ICU:
Neuroscience ICU cares for patients who have suffered stroke, traumatic brain and spine injury, aneurysm, autoimmune and movement disorders (including Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and Guillain–Barré syndrome) and neurological disorders. Patients in the unit are closely monitored for subtle neurological changes.
