JOB DESCRIPTION Summary/Objective

The Mechanic I performs skilled maintenance activities tosupport the mission of the Fleet Maintenance Division and assists the Fleet Superintendent and Assistant Fleet Superintendent in repair and maintenance ofthe Town’s Fleet in accordance with established policies and regulations,industry best practices, operations manuals, and manufacturers’ specifications.

Essential Functions

  • 1. Under the immediate supervision of the Fleet Superintendentand Assistant Fleet Superintendent, utilizes hand and power tools, precisionmeasuring and testing instruments to properly repair and maintain the Town’sfleet of vehicles and equipment.
  • 2. Perform mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance work to a variety of light to heavy duty diesel, gas, and electric poweredvehicles and equipment, including but not limited to all Town vehicles, trucks,lawn equipment, police cruisers, fire apparatus, etc.
  • 3. Inspects, diagnoses,troubleshoots, makes recommendations and repairs, and maintains vehicle and equipment components including but not limited engines, transmissions, axles,clutches, brakes, suspension, etc.
  • 4. Performs preventive maintenance work including but not limited to fluid and filter changes, lubricating andgreasing, and cleaning and washing vehicles and equipment at the direction ofthe Fleet Superintendent and Assistant Fleet Superintendent.
  • 5. Assists division lead in monitoring and tracking inventory of tools, parts, etc.
  • 6. Performs emergency repairs in thefield as necessary and responds to other related emergencies.
  • 7. Assist division superintendent with record keeping and updating procedures for record keeping.
  • 8. Assist division superintendent in improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas within the Fleet Maintenance Division.
  • 9. Assist division superintendent in scheduling third partyrepair work and arrange delivery and pick-up of vehicles and/or equipment fromoutside vendors and contractors.
  • 10. Operate light, heavy, and specialmotor equipment as required.
  • 11. Operate equipment in plowingsnow, sanding operations and ice removal.
  • 12. Participate in the on-callemergency listing.
  • 13. Assist other DPW operatingdivisions as needed.
  • 14. All other related work as required.

    Work Environment

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is exposed to a variety of extreme weather conditions.

    The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.

    While performing the duties of thisjob, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is veryactive and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching,crawling and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift or move itemsup to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move items up to 100 pounds. Specificvision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision,color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

    Abilityto use and wear personal protective equipment and clothing such as hearing protection, eye protection, foot and hand protection, and respiratory protection.
