Role Description
Student photographers/videographers help bring the stories that matter to life for communities across South Mississippi. They pitch and develop visual ideas, capture photos and video, and gather supporting elements from public events, interviews and local settings. They also edit footage and images to produce compelling packages for the web, broadcast, radio and social platforms.
They work closely with reporters, visual content producers and digital innovation specialists to create multi-platform projects that combine strong photography, video storytelling and audio. Student photographers/videographers are expected to follow AP Style for cutlines, meet deadlines, and ensure accuracy through clear, well-documented visuals.
This is real-world newsroom work that provides hands‑on experience in community journalism while building a professional portfolio. Student photographers/videographers are expected to work 20 hours per week during the semester.
Job Responsibilities
- Pitch one (1) original story idea by 12:00 p.m. each Thursday, including primary and secondary sourcing.
- Attend weekly editorial meetings, held virtually and in person in College Hall on USM's Hattiesburg campus, Fridays at 9:00 a.m.
- Work with team members to research, outline story coverage, and schedule interviews.
- Film and photograph elements for assigned stories, assisting with cutlines as needed.
- Edit broadcast packages, radio pieces, podcasts and other multimedia content.
- Write, film and edit special projects as assigned.
- Assist with marketing the center and center content.
- Other tasks as assigned.

The Roy Howard Community Journalism Center is a student‑powered newsroom at The University of Southern Mississippi, dedicated to reporting what matters in Southeast Mississippi’s underserved communities. We produce high‑impact, professional journalism that’s published across the state — and train students to do the kind of work that are top stories in real‑world newsrooms.
This role is ideal for students interested in photography, videography or video production who want hands‑on newsroom experience. You’ll be part of a professional newsroom environment and work on stories that matter — capturing video and photos, editing content, assisting with cutlines, and collaborating with reporters to tell stories visually across multiple platforms.
Your work will be distributed to dozens of major TV, radio, and print outlets throughout Mississippi — giving you credits that reach a wide audience and strengthen your professional portfolio.
