About the Trust

This consultant post is based in the Department of Neurophysiology at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington. The successful candidate will work with three full‑time consultants and two part‑time colleagues to deliver a comprehensive specialist diagnostic clinical neurophysiology service for OUHFT, the Thames Valley and the wider region.
Main Duties- Run the general diagnostic clinical neurophysiology service, including EMG, EEG, video‑telemetry, evoked potential and epilepsy (pre‑surgical evaluation and intracranial recording) for adults and children.
- Express a subspecialty interest to complement the department and undertake subspecialist activity in NCS/EMG, EEG, VT or sleep work.
- Participate in the urgent adult and paediatric EEG reporting rota, providing in‑hours weekday service and cover during colleagues’ leave.
- Perform or supervise reporting of EEG and video‑telemetry, support clinical meetings and case discussions, and conduct EMG or other specialty clinics.
- Supervise and guide registrars and physiologists within the Neurophysiology department.
The post‑holder will support high‑quality diagnostic services, contribute to service improvement, and play a key role in training and mentorship. No on‑call commitment is required.
Person Specification Qualifications- Primary medical degree
- MRCP or equivalent
- Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCT) in Clinical Neurophysiology; or registration on the GMC Specialist Register in Clinical Neurophysiology (and/or Neurology if applicable); or within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview
- Higher medical degree (PhD, MD or equivalent)
- Subspecialty interest in paediatric clinical neurophysiology
- Specialist accreditation in epilepsy or sleep
- Effective administrative and time‑management skills, with training in clinical management
- Knowledge of NHS organisational structure and practice
- Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
- Proficient computing skills (word processing, spreadsheets)
- Demonstrated achievements in developing or integrating digital systems into clinical practice
- Excellent spoken and written English; highly developed communication and interpersonal skills appropriate to a consultant in a large teaching hospital
- Evidence of leadership outside the NHS
- Technical expertise in neurophysiology diagnostic software
- Evidence of a recent 360‑degree appraisal
- Experience across the full range of core clinical neurophysiology investigations (EMG, EEG, EP, VT)
- Training in clinical neurophysiology to consultant level or equivalent
- Demonstrated ability to make decisions at consultant level and manage complex clinical problems
- Experience of consultant responsibilities in a tertiary neurosciences centre
- Independent reporting of complex EEG studies (epilepsy and/or sleep disorders) in adults and children
