Overview
This role is a hybrid role and will require the successful candidate to travel to mTrade's office in Oxford, Mississippi on a weekly basis.
The SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for, and plays a crucial role in ensuring the availability, reliability, and performance of SQL Server databases while safeguarding data integrity and implementing security measures. Their work is critical in supporting the organization's data-driven applications and decision-making processes.
Responsibilities- Database Installation and Configuration: DBAs are responsible for setting up new SQL Server instances, configuring them based on the organization's needs, and ensuring they meet security and performance standards.
- Database Monitoring and Performance Tuning:
Continuous monitoring of database performance is essential to identify and address potential bottlenecks or issues. DBAs use various tools to track performance metrics and apply optimization techniques to enhance query execution and overall system efficiency. - Backup and Recovery: DBAs oversee designing and implementing a robust backup and recovery strategy to protect data integrity and facilitate data restoration in case of disasters or data corruption.
- Security Management: DBAs enforce security measures to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access or breaches. This involves setting up user accounts, access permissions, and implementing encryption where necessary.
- Database Maintenance:
Regular maintenance tasks such as index rebuilding, statistics updating, and database integrity checks are performed by the DBA to ensure database health and minimize potential issues. - Capacity Planning: DBAs predict future database growth and assess resource requirements to ensure the SQL Server environment can handle increased loads without performance degradation.
- Patch Management and Upgrades:
Keeping the SQL Server environment up to date with the latest patches and updates is crucial for security and stability. DBAs plan and execute the patching process and may also be involved in upgrading SQL Server versions when necessary. - Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution:
When database-related problems arise, the DBA is responsible for investigating the root cause and implementing appropriate solutions to restore normal operations. - High Availability and Disaster Recovery:
Implementing and maintaining high availability solutions, such as failover clustering or Always On Availability Groups, is vital to minimize downtime and ensure business continuity. DBAs also work on disaster recovery planning and testing. - Documentation and Reporting:
Maintaining comprehensive documentation of the database environment, configurations, and procedures is crucial for knowledge sharing and adherence to best practices. - Collaboration:
DBAs often collaborate with developers, system administrators, and other IT teams to optimize database performance, troubleshoot issues, and support application development efforts.
Early to Mid-Level (0-5 years)
Qualifications- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft T-SQL
- Familiarity with Windows Server administration concepts
- Ability to follow operational runbooks, procedures, and change management processes
- Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Experience supporting Microsoft SQL Server in a Microsoft Azure environment
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, a related field, or equivalent professional experience
