Job Description Summary
This professional staff member is responsible for the collection of past due student accounts in accordance with Miami University’s accepted procedures and policies, and the management of inquiries from students and families (written and verbal) concerning the validity of the debt. This position may be approved for work on a hybrid basis. Remote work is not a right, but a working arrangement that can be modified or revoked by Miami University at any time for any reason.
EssentialDuties
- Establish a relationship with students in order to collect payment in full or, when necessary, negotiate monthly payment agreements.
- Document students’ files concerning actions taken and expectations for payment, and follow up when necessary.
- Provide proper paperwork for legal action; work with the Ohio Attorney General when necessary for court action.
- Responsible for updates to accounts referred for collection:
Answer telephone and written requests for documentation; work to find financial solutions for students and outstanding debt. - Work closely with the Office of Student Financial Assistance to ensure the application of aid to students’ accounts and be proactive in developing policies to work cooperatively in addressing student and family financial challenges with the goal of finding satisfactory resolutions.
- Work closely with other offices/departments to ensure that all resources for repayment have been utilized and the balance is represented correctly.
- Manage the collection system to ensure that students’ files are documented concerning actions taken and expectations for payment, and follow up when necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Associate’s degree, Bachelor’s degree or 1 year of work experience
Preferred QualificationsDesired qualifications include experience with Higher Ed systems, ad hoc reporting, experience in a customer service environment, and Title IV Federal Financial Aid requirements. Previous experience in collections.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesApplicants must have strong critical thinking, analysis, problem‑solving, and strong negotiating skills; must be detailed, organized; must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills; must have the ability to handle numerous tasks, assign priorities, and handle confidential information; must have the ability to establish working relationships with co‑workers, supervisors, university personnel, students, parents and outside collection agencies.
