Legal Assistant – Salinas & Oxnard, CA

Full‑time, hourly (non‑exempt) position. Salary range: $20.00 – $24.00 per hour, depending on experience.

Location:

Oxnard, CA (may also work in Salinas, CA). Work includes office duties, client intake, and event coordination for immigration services.

Summary

The legal assistant supports attorneys and Department of Justice (DOJ) accredited representatives in delivering affirmative and removal defense immigration services, client outreach, and event coordination. The role involves clerical support, case management, and collaborative work with UFW Foundation programs.

Essential Functions
  • Open, route, and respond to incoming correspondence and client communications.
  • Produce documents and correspondence, including merge documents and graphics.
  • Manage print tasks, copy materials, and prepare outgoing mail, email, and fax.
  • Coordinate special events and on‑site/off‑site group processing workshops.
  • Assist in completing immigration applications (e.g., DACA, citizenship).
  • Translate documents between Spanish and English.
  • Provide information to potential immigration applicants and follow up on intakes.
  • Maintain case databases and physical/email files.
  • Handle administrative support for attorneys, DOJ representatives, and other staff.
  • Assist with travel scheduling and venue coordination for legal teams.
  • Manage file organization, visitor greeting, and meeting preparation.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and supervise office volunteers (as needed).
Minimum Requirements

  • Experience working in immigrant, low‑income, and communities of color.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (or other language appropriate to community needs).
  • Multi‑tasking ability in a fast‑paced environment.

  • Commitment to immigrant and farm worker rights.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Problem‑solving and media communication experience.
  • Flexibility and accuracy in responding to changing priorities.

Education & Experience
  • Associate degree (two‑year college or technical school) or equivalent combined with two years of relevant experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license, vehicle, insurance, and willingness to travel.
  • Typing rate of at least 50 words per minute.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Hourly pay $21.00 – $24.00, depending on experience.
  • Vacation: 2, 3, or 4 weeks per year based on tenure.
