Fire Engineer; Department Promotion

Only current City of Oxnard Fire Department employees that meet the qualifications for the position of Fire Engineer are eligible for this promotional opportunity

Under the general supervision of a Company Officer, respond to fire suppression and/or other emergencies by driving and operating fire apparatus and rescue equipment; is responsible for the operational readiness of all company fire apparatus and equipment; performs inspection and code enforcement assignments for fire prevention; and participates in fire and life safety educational programs.

Fire Engineer is a journey level position responsible for independently performing the full scope of assigned duties including driving, operating, inspecting and maintaining fire apparatus and equipment. Fire Engineers may also provide training for lower level personnel, and must be able to exercise judgment and initiative. This position is distinguished from the lower classification of Firefighter by the specialized and complex work performed and higher degree of complex decision making in the absence of supervision.

Supervision of a Fire Engineer is provided by a Company Officer. Oxnard Fire Department Engineers do not routinely exercise supervision. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Drives fire apparatus to location of fire and/or other emergencies involving vehicle accidents, hazardous material accidents, rescue of trapped victims, and medical aid; operates fire apparatus ensuring proper set-up and appropriate hose lays; provides for safe operating water pressure to suppress fire; operates rescue equipment to free trapped victims; administers medical treatment to ill or injured persons.
• Operates a variety of tools including chain saws, extrication equipment, extinguishers, pike poles, rubbish hooks, extension ladders, pick-head axes, irons, and other related tools.
• Performs functions in a variety of specialized areas such as ladder truck operations, hazardous materials first response, urban search and rescue, ocean rescue, wild-land firefighting, high-rise firefighting, confined space rescue, public education and driver training.
• Inspects and tests fire apparatus and other equipment for mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical condition for operational readiness; performs maintenance and minor repair as necessary; updates maintenance records; reports need for repairs; communicates operational readiness of apparatus and equipment; participates in drills; assists with the training of firefighters.
• Responds to questions and concerns from the general public, provides information as is appropriate and resolves complaints; participates in public education programs related to fire prevention and safety; conducts station tours.
• May perform general maintenance of Departmental facilities; and perform other related work as required.
• Demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods and safety requirements associated with assigned duties.

(The following are minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification)

• High school diploma or GED
• 15 accredited college units in Fire Technology/Fire Science (must provide transcripts)
  OR
  California State Fire Marshal Fire Apparatus Operator 1A Certificate of Course Completion
• Three (3) years of full-time paid firefighter experience with the Oxnard Fire Department

• California Driver's License meeting one of the requirements set forth in the California Vehicle Code Section 12804.11
