Ceramics
The Art Program invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of ceramics instructor beginning in the fall of 2026. The successful candidate will have broad expertise in ceramic sculpture and wheel‑thrown pottery and the ability to teach all levels of undergraduate ceramics.
Key activities include: sharing studio and kiln operations management; teaching undergrad ceramics courses (beginning, intermediate, advanced throwing and sculpture techniques, and introductory 3D printing instruction); and collaborating with the area professor on curriculum development, infrastructure improvement, new facility establishment, and student recruitment.
Minimum Degree Requirements- Bachelor of Arts degree required, MFA preferred or commensurate professional and/or teaching experience
- Current knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in higher‑education teaching
- Experience teaching ceramics, visual arts
- Demonstrated experience in the ceramic or related professional fields
- Experience with ceramics as an art form, with understanding of both traditional and contemporary practices
- Understanding of firing techniques of various ceramic kilns
- Understanding of ceramic glaze formulation, handling, and application techniques
- Mastery of wheel‑throwing and ceramic sculptural techniques
- Mastery of foundational 3D concepts and applications
- Recognized participation in the professional field of ceramics
- Highly effective oral and written communication skills, including conveying conceptual and complex ideas
- Highly effective interpersonal skills
- Ability to engage a broad student population and provide mentorship supporting academic success
- MFA in ceramics or related field
- Recognized extensive participation in the professional field of ceramics
- Highly effective oral and written communication skills, including conveying conceptual and complex ideas

- Teach one or more face‑to‑face ceramic courses
- Use subject‑matter expertise to impart knowledge to students

- Design syllabus and curriculum as assigned

- Prepare and deliver course materials
- Evaluate student learning and assign grades
- Design interactive and motivational activities to fully engage participants and reinforce learning
- Update course materials periodically and monitor evaluations for curriculum improvement
- Respond to student needs and questions
- Create a high‑performance environment that motivates students of diverse backgrounds to succeed
- Apply technology and leverage resources appropriately to enhance the curriculum (e.g., use Canvas or arrange for guest speakers)
- Handle mechanics of the position according to deadlines (e.g., use computer, texts, A/V, grade submission)
California State University Lecturer Salary (Academic Year) Schedules (anticipated hiring ranges)
- Range 2: $5,507 – $6,677
- Range 3: $6,221 – $13,224
- Range 4: $6,825 – $14,523
- Range 5: $8,593 – $15,211
Placement into a range is based on qualifications and experience. Initial assignments are typically at the bottom third of the salary range. Monthly base salaries indicated above are prorated to the number of units worked and paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
