Distinguishing Characteristics
The Water and Wastewater Treatment Operator I is responsible for the operation of assigned facilities and resolution of the majority of routine operational problems. Assignments typically include one large or several smaller plants, and this entry-level technical class develops journey level knowledge and abilities. Incumbents primarily work at smaller facilities under a higher-level certified operator or supervisor.
The Water and Wastewater Treatment Operator II is responsible for the operation of assigned facilities and resolution of the majority of routine operational problems. Assignments include one large or several smaller plants, and this journey-level class works with a great level of independence as allowed by certification and assignment area.
The Water and Wastewater Treatment Operator III is responsible for the operation of assigned facilities and resolution of the majority of routine operational problems. Assignments may include one large or several smaller plants. This advanced journey-level class provides training and direction to personnel and performs the most complex operations and maintenance activities as allowed by certification.
Education and/or Experience Water and Wastewater Treatment Operator I- Experience:
One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience as a Water/Wastewater Apprentice. - Education:
Equivalent to a high school diploma. - License/Certificate:
Possession of a Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the California State Water Resource Control Board (SWRCB) or equivalent certification issued by a reciprocal state to California. - License:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license, and a driving record acceptable for insurability. - Desirable:
Possession of water certification from the California Department of Health Services. - Additional:
Depending on assignment, a valid Class B driver’s license may be required.
- Experience:
Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience as a Water/Wastewater Treatment Operator. - Education:
Equivalent to a high school diploma. - License/Certificate:
Possession of a Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the California State Water Resource Control Board (SWRCB) or equivalent certification issued by a reciprocal state to California. - License:
