City Corps Leader Trainee I

The City of Oxnard's Cultural and Community Services Department is seeking City Corps Leader Trainees to join our team!

Under close supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and skilled duties in support of assigned program functions. This is an entry-level position designed to provide the Trainee with opportunities to explore various career paths and be exposed to options, job readiness and training opportunities. The City Corps Leader Trainee is a classification assigned to staff 18 years of age and older.

Incumbents learn and are assigned a variety of duties related to community and public service projects. This position is distinguished from the City Corps Leader Trainee II by the need for direct supervision and the level of training required. The City Corps Leader Trainee I is expected to be enrolled in an educational program during their employment, and be actively developing and pursuing a vocational path.

Supervision Received/Exercised:
Close supervision is provided by higher level staff members. Work is reviewed for accuracy, timeliness, and thoroughness.

Work Schedule:

These positions work various schedules at various locations throughout the city of Oxnard. These positions may be required to be available to work additional hours and weekends as needed to respond to workload needs. These positions are not governed by the overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and are eligible for overtime pay.

Please note:

Extra-Help positions are not expected to last more than 960 hours. Under the terms of the City's benefits plan and policies, this position is not eligible for benefits due to the short duration of employment. In this position, employment with the City of Oxnard is at will, and those selected for temporary placement retain the option, as does the City of Oxnard, to end employment at any time, with or without notice and with or without cause.

Essential

Functions

(This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the Department.)

  • Observes and participates in various career-centered programs. Participates in job trainings, field visits and events that provide exposure to different fields of work.
  • Participates in and oversees lower level Trainees and activities related to event preparation including logistics and maintenance.
  • Participates in and assists with overseeing staff performing activities related to Department programs such as outdoor field preparation, recycling program efforts, and various recreational events.
  • Responds to questions and concerns from the public and program participants; provides information as appropriate and resolves concerns.
  • Participates in and leads teams in broad areas of community and public service support within the City, including supporting various City Departments, as well as engaging with community members and outside agencies.
  • Mentors other City Corps program participants.
  • Leads recreational activities for youth members.
  • Performs other related duties as is necessary.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • None required, but experience in volunteering and mentorship/leadership activities is highly desirable.

Licensing/

Certifications:

  • Possession or ability to obtain a valid Class C driver's license within twelve months of employment
  • A valid First Aid / Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) / Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate must be obtained within six months of employment.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be at 18 years of age or older
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing
