Overview

UCLA Health is currently accepting applications for its next Chief Information Officer. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences, with dotted-line relationships to the President, UCLA Health, and the Dean, David Geffen School of Medicine, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) serves as the senior executive for UCLA Health Information Technology. The CIO leads a strategic, integrated, and enterprise-wide IT function that supports the clinical, academic, and research missions of the health system. The CIO will build and sustain high-performing teams, foster inclusion, transparency, and fairness, and demonstrate a commitment to mentoring and developing staff.

The organization has 10 direct reports and 922 full-time employees, with oversight of approximately $240M in labor and operating costs and $29M in capital expenditures.

This position provides leadership, vision, and oversight for information systems and technology with a focus on service excellence, and responsibility for the direction, coordination, and management of all IT business and clinical functions. The CIO is accountable for the IT Security program, ensuring controls and processes are implemented and optimized. The clinical informatics program, including nursing and physician informatics, also falls within the CIO’s portfolio.

The CIO will collaborate with UCLA Campus IT to support the academic mission and with UC Health and UC Office of the President IT partners to ensure alignment and interoperability across the UC system.

Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership, vision, and oversight for information systems and technology across the health system.
  • Oversee IT security, ensuring controls, safeguards, and processes are implemented, operationally effective, and continually optimized.
  • Oversee clinical informatics programs for nursing and physician informatics.
  • Collaborate with UCLA Campus IT and UC partners to support academic missions and ensure system-wide alignment.
  • Lead high-performing teams, foster a culture of inclusion, transparency, and accountability, and mentor staff.
Qualifications
  • Visionary and collaborative leader with progressive IT leadership experience in a large, complex academic medical center; experience with cutting-edge technology and artificial intelligence is preferred.
  • Track record of supporting and optimizing electronic medical records, driving innovation, improving customer satisfaction, and ensuring strong fiscal performance.
  • Deep understanding of information systems, analytics, and data science in advancing patient care and biomedical research.
  • Ability to work effectively in a matrixed environment and foster cooperation across organizational boundaries.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; 5+ years of progressive IT leadership in a large, research-intensive academic medical center or comparable environment. Master’s degree in informatics, data science, or a related field, or at least 10 years of progressive leadership in higher education or academic medicine, strongly preferred.

The University of California, Los Angeles is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The full salary range for this position is $304,000 minimum to $684,200 maximum, and offers are determined based on finalist qualifications and experience.
