Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Labor & Delivery/Postpartum position at an acute care hospital in California, requiring at least 2-3 years of L&D experience and active CA RN licensure.
Responsibilities- Acute care hospital setting with a combined L&D and Postpartum unit
- L&D unit consists of 7 delivery beds, 4 triage beds, and 2 overflow beds;
Postpartum unit has 27 beds with a 5-bed nursery - Approximately 3 births per day (roughly 1,545 annually), including high-risk deliveries across all gestational ages
- Patient population includes high-risk OB, substance abuse/withdrawal, uninsured/no prenatal care, EMT drop-offs, and a large Spanish-speaking population; critically ill patients are transferred to higher-level facilities
- Unit follows AWHONN staffing guidelines for nurse-to-patient ratios
- Nurses are not required to scrub C-sections but must be able to circulate; two C-section suites with recovery are on unit
- L&D nurses are required to have postpartum experience and will float to Postpartum and NICU (grower/feeder patients); PP nurses may assist in L&D or NICU with tasks within scope
- Fetal monitoring uses Fetal Link, which integrates with Cerner EMR
- Cerner EMR used; experience strongly recommended
- 12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
- On-call is optional but preferred; candidates should be prepared to discuss availability during the interview
- OB/Neonatologist available on-call 24/7 with a 30-minute response time; RT and Pharmacy available 24/7
- OB techs available to scrub C-sections, assist with deliveries, stock supplies, and support patient intake
- At least one prior travel contract is preferred, though candidates with strong experience are encouraged to apply
- Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any Common Spirit, CHI, or Dignity Health facility within the past year; candidates who worked PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
- Floor-specific orientation consists of 3 shifts; general orientation is 12 hours
- Holiday coverage is required and will be coordinated with permanent staff — typically one major and one minor holiday
- Charge nurse and resource nurses are present each shift for both L&D and Postpartum units; OB techs provide additional support
- Navy scrubs required
- Travelers are first in line to float when floating is needed
- Active CA RN license (Standard or Compact/NLC) required; pending licenses are not accepted
- Required certifications (all must be active; pending not accepted): BLS, ACLS, NRP, and Advanced Fetal Monitoring (AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced)
- STABLE certification preferred
- Minimum 2-3 years of L&D experience required
- L&D nurses must have Postpartum experience
- Ability to circulate for C-sections required
- Cerner EMR experience preferred
- COVID vaccination required
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Copy of driver's license required for consideration
