Registered Nurse Labor and Delivery
The unit has 7 labor and delivery beds, 4 triage beds, and 2 overflow beds. There are 27 postpartum beds with a 5 bed nursery. On average, there are 3 births per day, totaling 1545 per year. Candidates should hold certifications in ACLS, BLS, NRP, and Advanced Fetal Monitoring. The facility follows AWOHNN guidelines for nurse-patient ratios. Fetal monitoring is conducted using the Fetal Link system, which integrates with Cerner.
The electronic medical record system in use is Cerner. Charge nurses and resource nurses are available to assist during shifts. OB techs are present to scrub in for C-sections and assist with deliveries. Nurses are expected to float between labor and delivery and postpartum units. L&D nurses must have postpartum experience, while postpartum nurses are not required to have L&D experience.
L&D nurses may also float to the NICU to care for grower/feeders. Common diagnoses include high-risk deliveries, substance abuse withdrawals, and cases with no prenatal care. Candidates should be prepared to work weekends, with 4 weekend shifts required in a 4-week schedule. Though call is optional, it is preferred that travelers are willing to take call shifts. Holiday shifts will be assigned in coordination with permanent staff.
Nurses should wear navy scrubs during shifts. There is no requirement for experience in scrubbing C-sections, but candidates must be able to circulate. Respiratory therapists and pharmacy staff are available 24/7.
