Overview
The City of Oxnard’s Wastewater Department is seeking a Collections Operator. Under general supervision, this position will carry out the full range of responsibilities assigned to the Wastewater Collection Operator series, including maintenance of wastewater and stormwater collection systems as well as flood control facilities and systems. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of applicable policies, procedures, and work methods, and perform related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities- Operate and assist with combination trucks and video inspection units
- Set up traffic control
- Perform weed abatement on earthen channels
- Remove debris and mowing
- Clean catch basins, culverts, and storm drains
- Be available for standby/on-call duty and work in wet conditions
- Operate heavy equipment
- Perform other related tasks as assigned
Utilities Field Technician, Senior
SupervisionIncumbents may serve as lead workers, assigning and monitoring the work of others
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThis classification is distinguished from the Utilities Field Technician in that it performs skilled inspection, maintenance and repair work of assigned equipment, and may serve as a lead worker by assigning work and monitoring work completion.
Work ScheduleThe normal work week is Monday through Thursday 6:30am to 4:00pm and alternating Fridays 6:30am to 3:00pm. Depending on the work assignment staff may be assigned to a shift outside the standard hours. Additional hours may be required to meet peaks in workload or department needs. This position is governed by the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay.
Responsibilities may require flexibility in hours.
Specific position assignments will vary by department needs.
Key Duties (examples)- Performs skilled installation, maintenance, repair and/or replacement of equipment in water distribution, wastewater collection and/or utility meter operations; may serve as a lead worker
- Performs inspections of equipment, systems and work sites; identifies issues and addresses them with repairs, adjustments or referrals
- Organizes and maintains equipment, tools, supplies and documentation
- Responds to inquiries and emergency requests; provides general information and directs complex requests to appropriate resources
- Performs other duties of a similar nature as assigned
Positions assigned to wastewater collection systems may be responsible for:
- Maintaining wastewater collection, storm water and flood control facilities
- Operating or assisting in operation of heavy equipment
- Opening and closing wastewater lines when necessary
- Performing concrete and other repairs
- Removing debris and cleaning catch basins, beaches and ditches
- Posting traffic control signs in work areas when flooding occurs
The following are minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:
Education- High School Diploma or GED
- One year of wastewater collections operations experience OR one year of experience comparable to a Utilities Field Technician with the City of Oxnard
- Basic knowledge and experience with most hand and pneumatic tools is highly desirable
- Valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record
- Possession of a Grade I Collection System Maintenance Certificate issued by CWEA upon hire
- Possession of or ability to obtain Grade II Collection System Maintenance Certificate issued by CWEA within 18 months from date of hire
- Possession of a valid Class B California driver's license with a tanker endorsement within 18 months of appointment
- First Aid/CPR and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) certifications within one year of hire
- Class A California driver’s license
- Must be able to speak and understand English to effectively communicate with fellow employees, customers, and vendors
