Overview
The City of Oxnard's Public Works Department is seeking a Streets Equipment Operator with strong technical and customer service skills to be part of the Streets Division team. The ideal candidate will approach work with a can-do attitude and be eager to learn and develop their career path.
What You’ll Do- Drive vehicles required to transport materials, tools and equipment; operate light, medium and heavy duty construction and street repair equipment including skid steerers, forklifts, excavators, trucks and trailers, loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, graders, rollers, spreaders, mowers and related equipment; operate a variety of hand and power tools such as blowers, jackhammers, concrete saws, weed eaters and other related tools
- Operate equipment for construction and maintenance activities involving streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, storm drains, waterways, beaches and related facilities
- Identify equipment needs for assigned projects; arrange rentals for equipment not in stock; direct the work of other personnel in the operation and maintenance of equipment; train others in operation and maintenance of equipment
- Perform a variety of construction and repair duties when equipment is not in operation; construct, maintain and repair concrete and asphalt; dig, shovel, haul and load soil, sand, gravel, cement, asphalt mixes and other materials; sweep and shovel debris and litter; clean and maintain catch basins, waterways and storm drains
- Perform after-hours emergency work
- Implement traffic control measures at job sites, including sign placement, traffic control arrow boards, and coning; direct traffic flow
- Serve as a crew leader
Maintenance Specialist
SupervisionReceives general supervision on routine items performed according to established standards and procedures and receives specific work instructions for non-routine matters and deadlines.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThis classification is distinguished from the Maintenance Technician, Senior in that it performs both skilled maintenance and skilled repair work and provides troubleshooting of equipment issues.
Work ScheduleStandard hours of operation are 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Thursday, and alternate Fridays, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Depending on the work assignment staff may be assigned to a shift outside the standard hours. Additionally, staff are required to be on standby on a rotating basis.
Essential FunctionsThis class specification represents core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary by Department needs.
- Performs skilled maintenance and repair work in assigned trade and/or area; plans, prioritizes and schedules activities to complete repairs and maintenance work efficiently; selects proper tools and equipment; monitors work site safety; follows established safety policies, procedures and applicable codes
- Performs maintenance inspections; troubleshoots equipment and system issues; identifies repair needs; reviews repair vs. replacement costs and makes recommendations; performs required repairs or coordinates with outside contractors
- Organizes and maintains assigned equipment and tools; inspects, cleans and performs preventive maintenance
- Reviews equipment and materials needed for daily maintenance and work projects; initiates requests for or purchases approved materials and supplies
- Prepares and maintains activity records, logs, work orders and technical documentation
- Performs other duties of a similar nature as assigned
The following are the minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:
Education- High School Diploma or GED
- Four (4) years of equipment operation/driving experience or formal trades experience related to the assignment
- A valid California Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record is required upon hire or within the first year of employment
- Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing
