Job SummaryThe Shelter Specialist provides supportive services and logistical support to the Emergency Shelter Program during designated shifts. Responsibilities include assisting with shelter activities, ensuring a safe and client‑focused environment, and supporting administrative duties. The role requires flexibility for weekend, morning, evening, and holiday shifts, strong communication skills, and a high level of dependability and responsibility. Fluency in Spanish is highly valued.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesShelter Support
- Assist in the implementation of shelter activities to ensure quality, guest‑focused, trauma‑informed delivery of services.
- Encourage and discuss progress toward housing with shelter guests.
- Assist with shelter setup, maintenance, and general cleanliness, including emptying trash cans and cleaning spills.
- Assist with receiving and verifying orders from vendors and completing tally sheets.
- Post and update signs and service calendars.
- Set up and monitor audio equipment.
- Organize supplies and facilities as needed.
- Conduct neighborhood patrols to minimize potential impact on the surrounding community.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs is required.
- Maintain detailed daily summary sheets.
- Assist with record‑keeping and reporting.
- Assists with guest services and program activities as necessary.
- Completes ad hoc projects as assigned by the supervisor.
Education and Experience
- High tolerance and understanding for individuals requiring urgent multiple case management and health needs.
- Capable of performing crisis intervention when needed.
- Ability to complete guest‑focused, trauma‑informed, and housing‑focused job duties.
- Reliable transportation.
- Flexible work schedule, including weekends and evening shifts.
- Detail‑oriented and computer proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Self‑motivated, able to manage a high volume of emails, work independently and with a group.
- Clear and respectful communication, both written and verbal.
- Multi‑tasking and fast‑paced work environment.
- Navigate urgent matters while maintaining flexibility.
- Work effectively with a diverse population.
- Rapid prioritization skills.
- Speak effectively before landlords and/or small groups.
- Knowledgeable about fair housing and legal concerns to advocate for the organization and the clients it serves.
- Enter units with program staff as needed.
- Answer and respond to phone queries.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift fifty pounds at times.
